Suspect in Massive CIA Leak Identified

  • John A. Schulte is facing a child pornography charge but is also accused of leaking classified CIA documents to Wiki Leaks last year

A suspect in the case of the CIA Vault 7 leak that was published by WikiLeaks past year has been arrested - but not on charges of leaking classified documents.

But the prosecutor, Matthew Laroche, an assistant U.S. attorney in NY, said that the government has not brought an indictment and that the investigation "is ongoing" and Schulte "remains a target of that investigation", according to a court transcript of the January 8 hearing that escaped public notice at the time.

Prosecutors said in court last week that they plan to file a new indictment in the next 45 days.

It is noted that despite the long months of investigation, prosecutors have been unable to charge him.

Schulte has actually been in jail since being indicted for possession of child pornography last September.

Roger said his son was in college when he set up the server later claimed to contain child pornography, and that he "had so many people accessing it he didn't care what people put on it". It's been almost a year since investigators put Schulte in their crosshairs; they've had access to this data for a long time, and custody of Schulte for five months after he violated the terms of his bail release.

Schulte 29 worked at the CIA as a software engineer who helped design malware used to break into the computers of terrorism suspects and other targets. He left in 2016
Former CIA engineer, 29, facing a child pornography charge is also suspected of leaking devastating secret agency documents to Wikileaks

Schulte's LinkedIn profile shows that he worked as a systems engineer at the NSA for four months before taking a job as a software engineer in 2010 at the Central Intelligence Agency, where he worked for six years.

He was released in September under the conditions that he avoid computers and not leave NY, but was jailed again in December after prosecutors said he violated those conditions.

The implication of the Tor claims is that Schulte would only have used it if he had something to hide. They conducted a number of search warrants on the defendant's residence. Schulte's attorneys have said that Tor is used for all kinds of communications and have maintained that he played no role in the Vault 7 leaks. A new batch of leaks included more than 8,700 documents and files. "In April or May of 2017, the government had full access to his computers and his phone, and they found the child pornography in this case, but what they didn't find was any connection to the WikiLeaks investigation", Kaplan said.

Part of the Vault 7 investigation includes "analyzing whether and to what extent Tor was used in transmitting classified information", Laroche said.

Tor, which is short for The Onion Router, routes data through a network of random proxies around the world, making the origin of data traffic hard to trace.

Schulte's January court hearing also revealed that he may face felony state charges in Loudoun County, Virginia, for sexual assault. In fact, our investigation is ongoing. The leak also led to security researchers finding cases of the tools actively infecting governments and companies since at least 2011.
