NBA Rockets lose star guard for Game 6

The Rockets managed to go 15-6 this season in games Paul missed when they had MVP front-runner Harden and blossoming center Clint Capela available.

Up 3-2 in their Western Conference Finals matchup against the reigning National Basketball Association champion Golden State Warriors, the Houston Rockets are just one win away from the Finals. When Harden sits, the Rockets will need to rely on the playmaking capabilities of Eric Gordon, who coach Mike D'Antoni said will start in Paul's place, and Trevor Ariza. As the Rockets had done at Oracle in Game 4, the Warriors fought back to tie the game at halftime. Houston doesn't dig out of a 12-0 hole without Paul, who never blinked. This team is the best third-quarter team in the National Basketball Association, and that needs to continue.

Unfortunately for the Rockets, Paul aggravated a previous hamstring injury in the final minute of Thursday's Game 5 win.

Paul is averaging 18.6 points, 7.9 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game this postseason.

"When we were kind of teetering, he made two or three threes", D'Antoni said. He's one of the best players that have played the game. I think they're sitting in there and they're angry, as they should be. He did say Paul is "worried" about the injury.

"Yeah, they're switching a lot when I get in the post now", Durant said after scoring a game-high 29 points on 8-for-22 shooting.

The Houston Rockets' win in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals came at a price.

Should the Warriors win Saturday, Game 7 will be Monday back in Houston. As far as the point guard's status for Game 6 goes, "We'll see". "If he's there, great, good for him. But great opportunity for other guys and we have plenty to choose from and we'll be ready".

In the immediate aftermath of the injury, Paul wore the look of a man who had been there before. It's going to be a bitter pill for Rockets fans to swallow if their team doesn't make it to the NBA Finals and they're nearly certainly going to say that the Warriors are only there because of luck.
