North and South Korean leaders hold surprise U.S. summit discussions

  • Donald Trump says US North Korea summit ‘could’ happen on 12 June

The U.S. and North Korea do not have formal diplomatic relations, complicating the task of communicating between the two governments.

The South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, crossed into the north at the border village of Panmunjom, where the two had met for the first time in April, according to Moon's office.

President Moon Jae-in had earlier said he was "very perplexed" and that it was "very regrettable" that the summit was not going ahead. "And if they are they are ready to do that then ... we're certainly ready to have those conversations", she said.

The report, quoting unnamed sources, said Kim Chang-son's trip to Beijing started on Thursday and could mean another China visit by the North Korean leader.

In a letter to Kim, Trump blamed Pyongyang for his decision to call off the summit, and warned North Korea against committing any "foolish or reckless acts" while also highlighting America's "massive and powerful" nuclear capabilities.

At an worldwide economic forum in St Petersburg on Friday, Chinese Vice-President Wang Qishan said it was vitally important for the USA and North Korean leaders to meet to maintain regional stability, and the cancellation was just a "brief interlude".

President Moon has worked assiduously to coax Trump and Kim to meet at the negotiating table given the reality that inter-Korean reconciliation, and ultimately peace on the Korean Peninsula, can not be achieved unless the United States and North Korea strike a deal on denuclearization.

Just before Trump announced the cancellation of the meeting, North Korea declared it had "completely" dismantled its nuclear test site in the country's far northeast, in a carefully choreographed goodwill gesture ahead of the summit.

American-North Korean relations have taken an number of twists and turns over the course of Trump's young presidency.

"They committed to remaining closely coordinated in all of their efforts to create conditions for dialogue with North Korea and agreed that must continue until North Korea embraces denuclearization", Nauert said in a statement.

In a tweet, Trump noted that statement's "warm and positive" tone. But he left the door open for talks, saying officials were willing "to sit face-to-face at any time". Moon urged direct talks between Trump and Kim to get things back on track.

Ryan Sheffield, who gave the president an F for his grammar, told Mr Trump he should probably "see me after class".

This latest statement by Choe seems to have been the final straw that pushed the White House to cancel the meeting.

"That diplomats are still at work on the summit, (the) possibility of a summit, so that's very good news", Mattis said. Moon said: "There will not be any more war on the Korean Peninsula".

Notably, the statement did not appear in Saturday's edition of Rodong Sinmun, the official mouthpiece of the North's ruling party that's widely read by North Koreans.

Ponsei University's John Delury, wrote: "So much of our frustration and failure derive from talking about North Korea rather than talking to North Koreans, treating talks as a reward".

"We are talking to them now", Trump said on Friday, adding that the summit with Kim may proceed and "it could even be the 12th".

Many observers had expected a belligerent North Korean response to Trump's cancellation, but the comments by Kim, the North's vice foreign minister, seemed, at times, nearly meek, and in stark contrast to the bellicose declarations past year of the North's willingness to pursue nuclear war.
