But for Roth the American experience and the Jewish experience were often the same.

In his over 50 years in showbiz, he wrote more than 30 books and won countless awards for his novels.

Philip Roth embodied idea of total writer, and dedication to his office demanded of him, as in case of Kafka, one of his most conspicuous influences, a seamless delivery, nearly a sacrifice. Like him, he went into abysses of human condition without calculating risks: "Every morning, I feel that I descend to a mine, from which at end of day I return with materials that after I have to go to page", he said in that conversation. But he received virtually every other literary honour, including two National Book Awards, two National Book Critics Circle prizes and, in 1998, the Pulitzer for American Pastoral.

Author of more than 25 books, Roth was a fierce satirist and uncompromising realist, confronting readers in a bold, direct style that scorned false sentiment or hopes for heavenly reward. By his early 20s, Roth was writing fiction - at first casually, soon with primary passion, with Roth observing he could never really be happy unless working on a novel, inside the "fun house" of his imagination. At end of twentieth century, triumphal march of his writing continued with works like American Pastoral, I married a communist and, already in third millenium, human stain. He would recall the hostile reception at a symposium at New York's Yeshiva University in 1962 as the "most bruising public exchange of my life".

"The death of Philip Roth marks, in its way, the end of a cultural era as definitively as the death of Pablo Picasso did in 1973", he wrote. He was the first three-time victor of the PEN/Faulkner Award, honored for "Operation Shylock" in 1994, "The Human Stain" in 2001 and "Everyman" in 2007.

There was in his way of understanding his vocation an attitude comparable to that of one of his most admired novelists, Dostoevsky.

In this March 22, 1993 file photo, American author Philip Roth is seen during an interview promoting his new book 'Operation Shylock: A Confession, ' in NY. In 2010, in Nemesis, he subjected his native New Jersey to a polio epidemic. Roth and Bloom were companions for several years before marrying in 1990; they separated in 1995. In The Plot Against America, published in 2004, he placed his own family under the anti-Semitic reign of President Charles Lindbergh.

Following the death of several friends, including novelist Saul Bellow in 2005, Roth wrote 'Everyman, ' a short work of fiction about the physical decline and death of a successful advertising executive. They were kids' books, books about sports, books about the sea.

"You have to be able to compress and condense", said Mr. Roth. A memorial is being planned in NY, possibly in September, his biographer Blake Bailey said. "Abundance and emptiness. Blazing forth and muddling through".
