  • Shakhtar's Fred to move to Manchester United for EUR 50 mln

City were in negotiations to sign the 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder in the January transfer window but no deal materialised.

"And if I am not mistaken, there was news of a strong bid by United". Though he remained in the rumour mill after, the profile of midfielder linked with the club changed to more possession-oriented types such as Thiago Alcântara, Julian Weigl and Jorginho.

Twitter user Jonathon posted a clip showing him searching for Fred's name in Norwood's list of people following.

The Red Devils have been starved of a tempo-dictating centre midfielder since peak Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick, and Fred has all the attributes to be a top-quality addition to the United middle-ground as Carrick departs.

The player yesterday spoke openly about the interest in him from Manchester rivals United and City.

"It is an honour to have the attention of the great coaches of Europe". United are in desperate need of a midfielder with good ball-winning qualities as well as a desire to push forward, so should he join, Fred could prove the flawless foil for Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.

The Italian, 28, has a year left on his contract and started only five Premier League games for United during the season just completed.

'That is, I can somewhat feel that Fred will be more expensive than Fernandinho and Alex Teixeira'.

United are also hoping to take advantage of Mauricio Pochettino's desire for Tottenham Hotspur to do their transfer business early in the pursuit of £50 million plus rated Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld.

Fred has 4 goals in 37 appearances this season.

Fred is expected to cost around £53million, which is his release clause, with Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov adamant that the Ukrainian club will extract maximum value for the midfielder.
