Ireland's push to liberalise its laws is in contrast to another traditionally Catholic European country, Poland, where the ruling conservative party and still powerful church are seeking to ban most abortions.

On Friday, Irish voters overturned the 8th Amendment to Ireland's Constitution, which made it illegal for women to have abortions in the country.

Yes vote supporters celebrate as the results in the Irish referendum on the 8th amendment concerning the country's abortion laws takes place.

Katy Gaffney, a 24-year-old baker who travelled home to Dublin from Berlin to vote, stood silently in front of the makeshift memorial crying.

The results of the vote led to an outpouring of emotion from the crowd of protestors, with many chanting the "Savita, Savita", in reference to dentist Savita Halappanavar, 31, whose tragic death in 2012 sparked global outrage. Saturday's referendum result will likely see the amendment repealed before the year is out.

'I was really glad to see her father say that yesterday they felt they had justice for their daughter, ' Ms Griffin added.

While the Irish Government plans to bring in legislation by the end of the year, the referendum result will not affect Northern Ireland, where cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality are not considered grounds for a legal termination.

"I feel very emotional", she said.

Backing for repeal was highest among young voters, including many who returned from jobs or universities in continental Europe to vote, but was also high among every age group except those 65 or older.

"We are calling on Mrs May, a self-identifying feminist, to negotiate with the parties in Northern Ireland and then to legislate without further delay", Chakrabarti said. As a result, Irish women would wished to terminate their pregnancies had to seek illegal options within the country - at the risk of being thrown in jail for 14 years - or travel overseas.

"What we see is the culmination of a quiet revolution that has been taking place in Ireland over the last couple of decades", Varadkar, who became Ireland's first openly gay prime minister previous year, told journalists in Dublin.

Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar votes as Ireland holds a referendum on liberalizing its law on abortion, in Dublin, Ireland, May 25, 2018.

Once passed, women in Ireland will be able to obtain first-trimester abortions in Irish hospitals.

"Our campaign does not end with the referendum, but when the government properly supports the mother and child", it said. "We have voted to look reality in the eye and we did not blink". Her parents in India were quoted by the Irish Times newspaper as thanking their "brothers and sisters" in Ireland and requesting the new law be called "Savita's law".

Abortion is still banned in some 20 countries worldwide, while others have highly restrictive laws in place. This amendment ensured that abortion would be allowed only of the mother's life was at risk.

"To be Irish now means to be open", he said.

She said members of online communities such as "Abroad for Yes" set up "amazing support systems", with people quickly chipping in to buy tickets for would-be voters who couldn't afford the trip home.
