Kim and Moon reportedly discussed the denuclearization agreement the two leaders signed when they first met at the border last month, according to a statement released by South Korea's presidential Blue House, as well as the potential summit with Trump.

USA defense and intelligence officials have repeatedly assessed the North to be on the threshold of having the capability to strike anywhere in the continental US with a nuclear-tipped missile - a capacity that Trump and other USA officials have said they would not tolerate.

The leaders of North and South Korea have agreed to meet "frequently" after their surprise summit on May 26 and suggested another face-to-face encounter was likely on June 1.

An unexpected meeting between the leaders of South and North Korea today has reignited hopes that a cancelled peace summit with US President Donald Trump could be revived.

The talks are expected to continue tomorrow at Tongilgak, or "Unification House", the building in the northern part of the demilitarised zone where Kim met Moon on Saturday, The Post reported.

Moon is scheduled to announce more details of the meeting Sunday.

Trump's decision to pull out of the summit with Kim came just days after he hosted Moon in a White House meeting where he openly cast doubts on the Singapore meeting but offered no support for continued inter-Korean progress, essentially ignoring the North's recent attempts to coerce the South.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in Capitol Hill at the weekend that the cancelled summit was "a good thing for Kim Jong-un".

"Should the North Korea-US summit succeed, I would like to see efforts to formally end the (Korean) war through a three-way summit of the South, the North and the US", Moon told a press briefing.

The North Korean government said Friday it is still "willing to give the US time and opportunities" to reconsider talks "at any time".

North Korea hardened its rhetoric toward the US on Thursday, lashing out after remarks by Vice President Mike Pence and the White House national security adviser, John Bolton, that had linked the country to Libya.

"Based on the bilateral alliance with the United States, we will get ready to move for progress on the abduction, nuclear and missile issues", a source with the prime minister's office said. "We'll see what happens", Trump told reporters.

Trump tweeted Friday morning, a day after he withdrew from the June 12 summit.

Kim Jong Un agrees with me on this.

Trump told reporters on his way to board the presidential helicopter that US officials are in talks with North Korea after the country's "very nice statement." on Friday.
