At the same time, the man who is basically the North Korean leader's chief of staff was spotted in the Beijing airport Monday en route to Singapore, the site of the potential summit.

In a letter addressed to Kim, President Trump said due to the "tremendous anger and open hostility" expressed in a recent statement, he believed it would be "inappropriate" to hold the meeting.

Nauert provided no further details.

Since then, North Korea has rejected US demands for it to unilaterally abandon its nuclear weapons program that experts say could threaten the United States.

Also in the group were Allison Hooker, the National Security Council's expert on Korea, and an unnamed Defense Department official. "We continue to prepare for a meeting between the president and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un".

On Monday, Trump spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the phone and the White House confirmed that the two will meet ahead of the summit.

Trump and Abe are scheduled to attend the G7 meeting of major industrialized nations June 8 in Canada, giving them a possible venue to meet.

"Our United States team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong-un and myself".

The summit is expected to take place in Singapore on June 12. He said there is a "lot of good will", and that denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula would be "a great thing".

The Koreas' talks, which Moon said Kim requested, capped a whirlwind 24 hours of diplomatic back-and-forth.

In a meeting with senior secretaries, Mr. Moon announced that more unplanned discussions would occur between North and South Korea.

Mr. Clapper, who's publicly butted heads with Mr. Trump over issues related to Russian interference in the 2016 USA election and special counsel Robert Mueller's probe, said a summit would be good regardless of whether there is any sort of agreement.

"What is unclear to Chairman Kim Jong Un is not the will for denuclearisation, but the concern that if (North Korea) denuclearises, whether the United States can end hostile relations and guarantee the security of the (Kim) regime", Mr Moon said.

Since then, North Korea has rejected U.S. demands for it to unilaterally abandon its nuclear weapons programme that experts say could threaten the United States.

At the same time, a team of US government officials, including the White House deputy chief of staff for operations Joe Hagin, left US Yokota Air Base in Japan for Singapore on Monday, NHK said.

U.S. officials told the Wall Street Journal that the USA was prepared to announce increased sanctions against North Korea but made a decision to delay the action indefinitely while talks with North Korea continue.

More significantly, Mr Moon secured the restart of ministerial-level inter-Korean talks on June 1, followed by a dialogue between military leaders and a Red Cross meeting to reunite families separated by the war. Since taking power previous year, Moon has sought to facilitate dialogue between Trump and Kim to avoid the possibility of a devastating military conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

The Korean leaders' second summit in a month saw bear hugs and broad smiles.

The Heritage Foundation's Bruce Klingner, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst on the Koreas, tells NPR's Elise Hu that the USA and North Korea still are not aligned on a definition of denuclearization.
