A Top Republican Says Trump Is Wrong About 'Spygate'

Jason Chaffetz, the former Republican Congressman from Utah turned Fox News contributor, is adding to the chorus of those criticizing Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Quoting Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-South Carolina, who noted on CBS earlier Wednesday that Trump "could have picked somebody else" for the position, Trump tweeted, "I wish I did!"

Trump has repeatedly referred to investigations of collusion between Russian Federation and his campaign as a "witch hunt" and tweeted his regret Wednesday for appointing Jeff Sessions as attorney general because he recused himself from overseeing the Russian Federation probe.

Rudy Giuliani, Trump's top defense attorney in the Russian Federation probe, said that Trump's desire for Sessions to oversee the investigation was appropriate. "I don't know if they've aired them out yet, but he's not going to fire him before this is over, nor do I think he should".

Trump has often railed against Sessions' recusal from the case, voicing frustration that it has left him without someone he feels should be loyal to him at the country's top law enforcement agency to protect him from the year-long probe headed by special counsel Robert Mueller. I should add that I don't profess to understand what he is up to now.

Presidential attorney Rudy Giuliani and former Trump campaign adviser Sam Nunberg say Mr. Trump acted within the bounds of his presidential authority. More recently, he said, Trump has not actively considered firing Sessions, but has wondered if he made the right decision in not doing so previously.

In a separate interview Tuesday night with Fox News, Gowdy disputed Trump's claim that the Federal Bureau of Investigation planted a "spy" inside his campaign.

Other lawmakers and allies of the president have reportedly spoken to the phone with Trump in recent months and used the opportunity to raise several points to the president: Namely, that conservatives in Congress would revolt against the administration if Sessions, a longtime senator, was fired. "Nor do I think he should". Republicans on Capitol Hill want to avoid unnecessary drama ahead of the elections, but once Mueller completes his investigation some are now suggesting it may then be time for Trump and Sessions to part ways. He might not be as loyal as Trump would demand, but he's a straight shooter who might get through a Senate confirmation hearing intact, who also has some free time coming up soon.

If Sessions does bail, though, maybe Trump should consider Gowdy for the job.
