Shocked by Napoli's ability to lure Carlo Ancelotti to the Serie A club, star forward Lorenzo Insigne welcomed the Italian great's arrival, while he thanked former boss Maurizio Sarri.

"He brought joy and prestige to Napoli and fans all over the world with an entertaining brand of football that drew praise from all quarters".

59-year-old Sarri is leaving his hometown club after three seasons, which has seen two second placed finishes and a third.

For Napoli, they realise any Serie A title next season will take another monumental effort while a sustained challenge in Europe may be even tougher.

The meeting took place in De Laurentiis' Filmauro movie production company building in Rome, and Ancelotti was filmed arrived and departing.

Zenit St Petersburg and Chelsea are both reported to be interested in signing former Empoli coach Sarri, and Napoli would prefer they pay the release clause, so do not want to sack him.

"I am really happy and honoured to manage a team with a unique city and incredible fans", said Ancelotti, as quoted by BBC Sport.

Shortly before the announcement, De Laurentiis publicly thanked Sarri, without officially confirming his departure.

Di Marzio believes Chelsea will meet with Sarri's representatives in London, but the man himself will not be present. In fact having picked up 91 points this season, it is the first time that an Italian club has reached 90 points and not won the title.

According to Sky Sports Italia, Zenit have invited the 59-year-old former banker to Russian Federation to see Saint Petersburg and their training facilities. He returns nine years later to Serie A where he was named coach of the year in 2001 and 2004 at Milan, the club where he won eight championships.

Prime among those clubs is Chelsea, who are now expected to appoint Sarri as their new head coach when current boss Antonio Conte is relieved of his duties.
