Populists demand new vote to end Italy crisis

  • Italy's premier-designate called to provide an update on Cabinet

National Australia Bank said in a commentary: "Fears of a euro existential crisis are gathering momentum amid simmering political turmoil in Italy".

"It was a big mistake to say no to a government which had a majority, a programme and a list of ministers", said Salvini.

"This circumstance, also considering market tensions, has compelled him to wait for further developments", the statement said. President Sergio Mattarella has called to his office the former International Monetary Fund official he'd tapped to run a possible interim government of technocrats.

Financial markets have been on a rollercoaster ride over the past few days, but Milan stocks closed up 2.09 percent on Wednesday, and the bond market strengthened slightly.

It wasn't clear what shape a political government might take.

There were even calls for Mattarella's impeachment earlier in the week from the M5S, but the party's leader has now said that option is off the table. Italy has never before had a July election: the timing, during the traditional summer holiday season, could affect turnout significantly, and the short notice might cause problems for Italian voters living overseas.

The President sparked another political crisis in Rome when he refused to accept Conte's nomination for economy minister, 81-year-old Eurosceptic Paulo Savano.

Mattarella vetoed the populist coalition's anti-euro choice for economy minister Savona, causing the two populist parties to abandon their joint bid for power.

"The initiative for a new anti-establishment government ... would have to imply a credible pro-European commitment and a commitment to the Italian Constitution, i.e. the fiscal framework, to have any chance of flying", Codogno said.

According to the parties, the League's Salvini will lead interior ministry in the would-be cabinet while Di Maio of the 5-Star will take portfolios of labor and industry under a newly-created ministerial position.

Salvini suggested he preferred a neutral government to lead until elections after the summer break.

Demanding an immediate ballot, Salvini told followers on Facebook: "It won't be an election, it will be a referendum between Italy and those on the outside who want us to be a servile, enslaved nation on our knees". The center-right coalition, including Lega, got 37 percent, while the Democratic Party won about 20 percent of the vote.

Conte had been expected to teach at Florence University on Friday morning, but with signals that the 5-Stars and League might get another shot at forming a government, he grabbed a train for Rome.

The centre-right alliance grouped the League with ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia and the smaller right-wing Brothers of Italy.

Earlier, he dismissed a Five Star offer to form a populist government, calling instead for early elections as soon as possible "but not at the end of July" because of holidays.

As Italy enters a period of political turbulence and the market has shown signs of tremendous uncertainty in Southern Europe, the White House told Newsmax on Wednesday it was monitoring the Italian situation.

"I am absolutely pro-Europe". "But certainly Italy has been pushed a bit to the margins".

Mattarella had on Sunday vetoed Savona as part of a Five Star-League administration, citing concerns about his stand on the euro.

Cottarelli has said that should his technocrat government win parliamentary approval, it would stay in place until elections at the "start of 2019".
