Ukrainian officials cast accusations against the Kremlin on Tuesday after prominent Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko was shot and killed in Kiev. His wife found him covered in blood and called an ambulance, but Babchenko died of his wounds on the way to the hospital, the newspaper reported.

Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko surprised everyone Wednesday by showing up alive at a news conference on Ukrainian television, a day after he was reported dead, telling reporters his death was faked as part of a special intelligence operation.

Arkady Babchenko, Russian journalist and Kremlin critic, was murdered last night. "I would like to apologise for what you have all had to go through", Babchenko told reporters at a press conference. "I'm sorry you had to go through this but there was no other way".

Sporting a black hoodie and appearing somewhat perplexed, Babchenko first offered his wife "special apologies for the hell she's been through these past two days".

Babchenko has lived in the Ukrainian capital since receiving threats at home for saying he did not mourn the victims of a Russian military plane crash.

Reporters Without Borders condemned Wednesday the staging of a murder of an anti-Kremlin journalist in Ukraine as a "pathetic stunt".

It said it had detained a Ukrainian citizen recruited by Russian Federation to find someone to kill Mr Babchenko.

Another journalist, Sergiy Grishyn, said "Babchenko will have to give me money for pills" for the stress he'd suffered.

Ukrainian officials led by Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman had accused Russian Federation of being behind the killing of the Kremlin critic, a charge that Moscow batted back.

Russia's Foreign Ministry condemned the murder and urged Ukraine's authorities, worldwide bodies and NGOs to monitor the investigation closely.

Russia's foreign ministry expressed relief at Babchenko being alive.

While studying law in Moscow aged 18, Mr Babchenko was conscripted into the Russian army and served during the Chechen wars from 1994-2000.

Babchenko was killed less than a month after Putin was inaugurated for his 4th Kremlin term and as Russian Federation gears up to host the World Cup later this month.

"I'd like to draw your attention to Russia's ongoing aggression in Ukraine".

In a statement following Babchenko's big reveal Wednesday, the Committee to Protect Journalists urged authorities to explain the reasoning behind the staged death in greater detail. His flight from Russian Federation came several months after he wrote in a Facebook post that he wasn't sorry members of a military band and state television journalists died in a plane crash on their way to Russia's military base in Syria. Prominent journalist Pavel Sheremet was killed in Kiev on July 20, 2016, when an explosive device detonated under the vehicle he was driving.
