Babchenko, who was reported murdered in Kiev, dramatically reappeared alive on Wednesday in the middle of a briefing by the Ukrainian state security service about his own killing.

"I have buried acquaintances, I have buried colleagues, I have buried friends, I am exhausted of burying them", said Babchenko, who fought in Russia's two wars in Chechnya before becoming a war journalist.

British authorities say that Skripal, a former Russian double agent, was poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent in the British provincial city where he lived after leaving Russia in a spy swap.

He went on to thank the Ukrainian Security Service, the SBU, for saving his life and said the most important thing was that what he called other big acts of terror had been thwarted.

Britain says Russian Federation is culpable for the poisoning, an allegation Moscow denies.

Ukraine has been sharply criticised for the hoax, with critics saying it gives Russian Federation - which it blamed for the fake murder - the moral high ground.

Babchenko said he was exhausted after playing out the elaborate ruse.

The movie-like twist came as Gritsak convened the news conference to announce that the security agency and the police had solved Babchenko's reported slaying.

Babchenko disclosed for the first time details of how the deception involving his fake death had been carried out. Then you can teach me how to protect my family. "I do not have sufficient information to evaluate them myself", Maas said.

He quipped that nobody had shown him a letter from President Vladimir Putin ordering his murder, but that despite initial scepticism he now believed assertions from the Ukrainian security service that he had been targeted in a Russian plot. He explained that he had faked his own death, with the help of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), in a Hollywood-style sting operation created to capture those who really were out to get him.

"It is anti-Russian bluster instead of talking about the need to conduct a thorough, objective investigation", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters before it was revealed that Mr Babchenko was alive and well.

Once inside the morgue, Babchenko said he was "resurrected", taking off the blood-stained clothes.

"We managed not only to break this cynical provocation, but also to document the preparation of this shameful crime by Russian special services", SBU chief Vasyl Hrytsak said.

"Relieved that Arkadiy #Babchenko is alive!" tweeted the office of Harlem Desir, media representative of the European security and rights watchdog OSCE.

There are concerns about how the Babchenko saga plays into the ongoing tensions between Russian Federation and Ukraine, both over territory and control of information-and what a journalist was doing in the middle of an argument between two states.
