  • PARDON ME Conservative filmmaker and author Dinesh D'Souza speaks during the final day of the 2014 Republican Leadership Conference

President Donald Trump announced in a tweet on Thursday that he will fully pardon the "openly racist" right-wing propagandist Dinesh D'Souza, who pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations in 2014 and has-in just the past year-mocked school shooting survivors, circulated anti-semitic lies, and suggested that the white supremacist Charlottesville rally was "staged". Lewis "Scooter" Libby, former Vice President Dick Cheney's onetime chief of staff, who was convicted in 2007 of lying to investigators and obstruction of justice following the 2003 leak of the covert identity of Central Intelligence Agency officer Valerie Plame.

Mr. D'Souza also slammed Mr. Bharara in a series of tweets after he was pardoned and alleged that one Indian American had tried to destroy the career of another Indian American. "I can not believe how stupid I was, how careless, and how irresponsible", D'Souza wrote in a statement to the judge. Critics have slammed him for promoting questionable propositions in his books and movies, such as the idea that slaves were treated "pretty well" and a 2010 Forbes cover story that argues Obama had been "the most antibusiness president in a generation" and driven by a "socialist" and "anticolonialist" agenda. D'Souza had pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud.

He also personally contributed $10,000 to the campaign of Republican Wendy Long, who ran unsuccessfully for Senate in NY in 2012 - twice the legal limit for individual contributions at the time.

"As our office's record reflects, we will investigate and prosecute violations of federal law, particularly those that undermine the integrity of the democratic electoral process, without regard to the defendant's political persuasion or party affiliation", he said in 2014.

D'Souza said in one tweet that the students had received the "worst news since their parents told them to get summer jobs".

D'Souza was also sentenced to an eight-hour day of community service every week of the five-year term, weekly counselling, and was ordered to pay a $30,000 fine along with a $100 special assessment.

D'Souza has been an outspoken supporter of President Trump.

D'Souza pleaded guilty in 2014 to campaign finance fraud, after a prosecution headed by Preet Bharara, then the US attorney for Manhattan. As Trump "fired" Blagojevich as a contestant, he also praised Blagojevich for how he was fighting his criminal case, telling him: "You have a hell of a lot of guts".

This is the fifth pardon of Trump's presidency.

Still, experts say the signal about a potential pardon is meant to assuage former campaign aides, including Paul Manafort and Cohen, to remain loyal to the president. "The president is making decisions based on the merits of the individual cases and what he thinks is the right thing to do", she said.

"[Martha Stewart] used to be my biggest fan in the world... before I became a politician", claimed Trump on Thursday. He said previous pardons for former Maricopa County (Arizona) Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former White House aide Lewis "Scooter" Libby fall into the same category.

His tweets about the Parkland students have been sharply criticized by some Florida Republicans, including Gov. Rick Scott.
