Microsoft agrees to acquire coding website Github

  • Microsoft is buying code-sharing site GitHub, say reports

GitHub now has over 27 million software developers contributing to over 80 million repositories of code.

Business Insider also notes that Microsoft has held acquisition talks over the years with GitHub and that those talks "have grown more serious in the past few weeks". Its co-founder, Tom Preston-Werner, resigned in 2014 after harassment allegations surfaced.

But the report cites "people close to the companies", which suggests multiple sources that are tied, collectively, to both Microsoft and GitHub.

Bloomberg reports that GitHub's leadership chose to allow Microsoft to acquire it, based on the performance and leadership of Redmond CEO Satya Nadella, who has moved Microsoft beyond its "embrace, extend, and extinguish" days. Microsoft, once opposed to that kind of open-source software development, is now one if the biggest contributors to GitHub. It lost some $66 million over three quarters in 2016. Github gave smaller, growing companies a way to implement some of the best practices in place at tech conglomerates while finding and contributing to the open-source projects that changed the way software was developed. The stepping down of CEO Chris Wanstrath previous year created slight feelings of unease, and a replacement is yet to be found for him. It also helps Microsoft, which is increasingly relying on open-source software, to add programming tools and tie up with a company that has become a key part of the way Microsoft writes its own software. Chief Business Officer Julio Avalos joined the company's board of directors and now serves as the day-to-day face and leadership of the company, Bloomberg noted.

In early May, Microsoft revealed a new partnership with GitHub that was meant to bring the power of Azure DevOps services to GitHub users.
