The volcano, known to be one of Central America's most active, has destroyed homes and blanketed nearby villages in a cloud of heavy ash. "There are injured, burned and dead people", Sergio Cabañas, the general secretary of Guatemala's CONRED national disaster management agency, said on radio.

Israel says it has delivered food, blankets and medicine to Guatemala after a volcano erupted there, killing at least 25 people.

The Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala has erupted, shooting ash 10 km into the air and blanketing villages within 25km of the crater. Three bodies lay partially buried in ash-colored debris from the volcano, which lies about 27 miles (44 kilometers) from Guatemala City.

Other videos from local media showed residents walking barefoot and covered in muddy residue.

The dead were from farming communities just south of the volcano who were trapped by hot lava flow, National Disaster Relief Agency spokesman David de Leon told reporters.

It is the second time this year that the volcano has erupted. Lesser amounts of ash reached the capital of Guatemala City some 25 miles away, forcing the closure of its global airport, CONRED said.

"That could cause more mud flows and nearby rivers to burst their banks", said Eddy Sanchez, director of Guatemala's seismological, volcanic and meteorological institute.

Rescue operations were suspended until 5:00 A.M. (1100 GMT) due to unsafe conditions and inclement weather, said Cecilio Chacaj, a spokesman for the municipal firefighters' department.

Mr Cabanas said four people died when lava set a house on fire and two children perished while standing on a bridge watching the eruption.

At an ad-hoc morgue in the town of Alotenango, at least three bodies lay covered with blue sheets.

Volcan de Fuego, situated on the borders of Chimaltenango, Escuintla and Sacatepéquez, sent out an 8km stream of lava, with smoke and ash surrounding the area.

Aviation authorities there closed the worldwide airport due to the potential danger to planes by the ash, the AP reported.

In an official bulletin, the Guatemalan government revealed that ash columns reached more than 10 thousand meters above sea level and pyroclastic flows have descended from the burning crater.
