Muguruza thrashes Sharapova to reach semi-finals

No. 28 Maria Sharapova had a good run at this year's French Open, but she fell short in her first quarterfinal match since the 2016 Australian Open after running into defending Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza.

1 Simona Halep won a bruising quarterfinal battle against Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2 to book a match against Garbine Muguruza in the French Open semis.

Muguruza will face world No.1 Simona Halep, who got the better of Angelique Kerber over three sets.

Muguruza maintained her momentum with a break in the first game of the second set, but the Spaniard was broken to love in the next game when she netted after a forehand from Sharapova landed just inside the baseline.

Kerber, bidding to become the second German woman to reach the last four here, after Andrea Petkovic, since Steffi Graf in 1999, was visibly ailing because of blisters in the deciding set and the medical time out after three games didn't help her to solve the issue.

"And I think we played many matches".

But the 26-year-old amassed six of her 30 unforced errors in the first in the tiebreaker. 'I think there is a lot of autobiographies out in the world, especially in the sporting world, that don't necessarily speak about whether they were rivals or someone they competed against. Keys predicted, "I'm going to have to be the one to try to open up the court and go for my shots". But, I mean, I think she made everyone wait a little bit'.

It ranked among one of the most lopsided losses ever suffered by Sharapova in her Grand Slam career.

"When you're facing somebody that also has an aggressive style of game", Muguruza said about facing Sharapova, "I think it's about who takes the command, who takes the first opportunity". I just went and searched for her in the training room. The 24-year-old Muguruza holds a 3-1 record over Halep, with the victor of the last-four clash to face either Sloane Stephens or her fellow American Madison Keys in the final. Kerber won the sixth of the nine played this year to move even nearer to her maiden Roland Garros semifinal. As she told the press after her quarterfinal win, "There were times when I had to go back and hit a higher ball, where maybe before I would have tried to hit a line-drive victor". I think there's a difference between being intense and wanting it and fighting and just not being nice, so that's something that I have always stayed true to.

She needed only 70 minutes to eliminate Sharapova and dominated her with superb returning, breaking the former No. 1 a half-dozen times.

But this gesture towards her coach Darren Cahill was more than a celebratory pose, it was a sign that this was 'the new Simo'.

Muguruza pounced on an error-plagued Sharapova start to lead 4-0 with a double break.

But Stephens has yet to lose a set to Keys in their two previous meetings and Keys has come through a very open quarter of the draw that was supposed to be anchored by No.4 Elina Svitolina. "One day I will make it".
