The mission marked the 13th time in 14 months that SpaceX has re-flown a used Falcon 9 booster, which the company refers to as a "flight proven" rocket.

Elon Musk's SpaceX has extended the date of the launch of a commercial communications satellite named SES-12 to June 4, 2018. However, this time the company would not be attempting to retrieve the first stage of the rocket. The satellite was earlier sheduled to be set in motion in to the orbit with the help of a previously flown Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX pad situated in Florida on Friday at 12:29 a.m. EDT. At that altitude and equatorial orientation, satellites take 24 hours to complete one orbit and thus appear stationary in the sky as the Earth rotates. Instead, the satellite will have an electric drive that uses xenon gas pulses to slowly circulate its orbit around the equator for a period of months.

Praising the Block 5, he added: 'We get a lot of performance from this vehicle. The good side of all this is it actually extends our (on orbit) life capability from 15 to 22 years. It is expected to enter service in late January or early February.

SES-12 is capable of supporting requirements in multiple verticals from Cyprus in the West to Japan in the East, and from Russian Federation in the North to Australia in the South.

'From its orbital position, SES-12 will also be pivotal in supporting government efforts to bridge the digital divide through connectivity programs and provide television operators with additional capacity to deliver more content and higher picture quality to meet customer demand'.

"This is an incredibly flexible satellite that we're putting into our fleet", said John-Paul Hemingway, CEO of SES Networks. "That's pretty unique in the industry".

The SES-12 satellite will provide direct-to-home broadcasting, VSAT, Mobility and High Throughput Satellite (HTS) data connectivity services in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, including India and Indonesia.

And satellite internet service promises to grow at an equally astronomical rate. "And satellite is one of the (ways) - and sometimes the only way - to connect.to those markets".

"If you take all those numbers together, this is really exciting for us", he said.
