Doug Ford rode a populist wave to power in Ontario on Thursday, capturing a Progressive Conservative majority by harnessing voters' economic anxiety and anger with a scandal-plagued Liberal government.

In the crowd, Trudi Lorenz expressed disappointment at the Progressive Conservative win, saying she had hoped the NDP would have at least been able to form a minority government.

Kenney, she added, must be cautious when signalling he will join Ford to combat the federal government's carbon tax because the move could backfire since it is viewed as part of a broader environmental plan that has generated greater support for the Trans Mountain pipeline.

"Together we have made history".

"We are proud that our measured and principled approach to modernization made voting even easier for many electors across the province while maintaining the integrity and security of our elections", said Ontario's chief electoral officer Greg Essensa. He was a de facto deputy to his late brother, Mayor Rob Ford, who became notorious in 2013 when he admitted to smoking crack cocaine while in office.

In his victory speech, Ford thanked his brother. "I believe in the market dictating", he said in the interview. I've never put that one to the test, mostly because I've never encountered any sort of a wait, but I'll see if I can push it this time. But in contrast to Trump, he campaigned hard among Canada's immigrant communities who hold considerable sway in several ridings in the province.

Not only did Doug Ford win the vote as Ontario Premier, the Conservatives's gained a majority government by winning 76 seats total.

Of course she had wanted to accomplish a lot, Horwath said, "but we now have another job, and the people of Ontario have asked us to hold this Ford Conservative government to account".

One reason the ballot-counting could drag into Wednesday or later: many Californians vote by mail.

But he pointed to different underlying reasons. "United we stand as a country and I'll work hand in hand with the prime minister". Instead he saw Ford's victory as a rejection of the governing Liberals, who had steered the province to the left during their 15 years of rule.

Kathleen Wynne, the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and the first openly gay premier in Canada, will step down from her post.

"I think it's important", she said.

The Ontario ballot was a vote for change as much as anything else, Notley said.

But the dizzying pace of initiatives rolled out by Wynne's government might have also played a role, said de Clercy, citing a rise in the minimum wage and reforms in workplace legislation and education.

"Parents across Ontario have reason to celebrate today: Kathleen Wynne's war against the family, the children, and people of faith in Ontario has come to a screeching halt", she said in an email to PAFE supporters.

With about one week left in the campaign, the party published a list of promises and their price tags, but didn't indicate how they would pay for them, what size of deficits they would run or for exactly how long.

Led by Andrea Horwath, the NDP earned 34% of the vote.

"No voter is assigned a particular place to vote, like with polling places", Jarboe said.

As a result, Elections Ontario has extended voting hours in seven locations.

Davenport expects roughly 54 percent to 58 percent of registered voters to turn up to the polls, but with new zoning, he wants to be sure the public knows where they are supposed to go.

But that doesn't mean it's necessarily bad news for Trudeau politically.
