Net Neutrality Is Officially Over Giving ISPs Total Control Of Your Bandwidth

  • Net Neutrality Ends Tomorrow, FCC On Track To Remove Rules As Scheduled

Under net neutrality, internet service providers were classified as utilities instead of information services, and subjected to broad federal regulation.

FILE PHOTO: Chairman Ajit Pai speaks ahead of the vote on the repeal of so called net neutrality rules at the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, U.S., December 14, 2017. The principle was born as regulators, consumer advocates and internet companies voiced concern about what broadband companies could do with their power as the gateway to the internet - blocking or slowing down apps that rival their own services, for example.

Q. What's net neutrality, again?

Internet providers such as AT&T, Verizon and Comcast had to treat all traffic equally.

The internet probably won't immediately become (more of) a dystopian nightmare.

"On the day net neutrality repeal takes effect, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai retreats to Fox to avoid criticism", Media Matters tweeted Monday afternoon. Here's what we can expect from tomorrow's internet.

"The United States has a specialized telecom agency with the expertise and technical capability to protect net neutrality and ensure an open internet", FTC Commissioner Terrell McSweeny had said. Last month, the Senate passed a last-ditch effort to overturn the FCC's repeal, but it never progressed to a House vote and was officially repealed Monday. The rules also restricted ISPs from charging extra for certain traffic, creating so-called fast lanes for companies and consumers.

While the now-defunct net neutrality rules didn't specifically address interchange disputes, they did give the FCC broad latitude to oversee the "general conduct" of broadband providers to determine if the companies were being anticompetitive or interfering with customers' ability to access internet sites and services.

However, in the op-ed Pai does not defend against any of the common arguments for Net Neutrality.

Some lawmakers, states and tech companies are still fighting to save the rule. T-Mobile, for example, was criticized by net neutrality supporters for effectively making it cheaper for customers to stream videos from Netflix and HBO, putting other video services at a disadvantage. If the only providers that can serve state governments are those that observe net neutrality, these states reason, then it could shape what services consumers are offered, too. But here are a few tactics that have been tried before that have drawn scrutiny under the old net neutrality rules. And in May, the Senate voted in favor of reversing the FCC's repeal; however, the measure still needs to be passed in the House of Representatives, where afterwards it will then need President Trump's signature.

Governors in six states signed executive orders and three states have enacted net neutrality legislation. On Thursday, with the official repeal date looming, dozens of senators sent a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan urging him to schedule a vote on the issue.
