Trump warns Trudeau: Trade row 'will cost Canada a lot of money’

  • Peter Navarro a White House trade adviser apologized Tuesday after saying

The Canadian leader did not directly respond to Navarro's comments, but Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland called the remarks not "particularly appropriate or useful" later Sunday.

"Let me correct a mistake I made", Navarro said at a Wall Street Journal conference, according to video provided by the Journal's CFO Network.

"My mission was to send a strong signal of strength". It came from an older, more familiar problem: The U.S. President didn't grasp or care that there's politics in Canada, too.

The backstabbing charge seems over the top, but the White House's contention is that Trudeau ought to have capped the G-7 summit by talking about Trump and the U.S.

The Trudeau hate began after the Prime Minister held a press conference and told reporters that the new USA tariffs on steel and aluminum are "kind of insulting" and that Canada "will not be pushed around".

At a news conference Tuesday after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump recounted his recent tough exchanges with Trudeau.

"I think that Justin probably didn't know that Air Force One has about 20 televisions", Mr. Trump said Tuesday.

Trudeau had said using national security as a justification for tariffs was "kind of insulting" to Canadian veterans who had stood by their U.S. allies in conflicts dating back to World War I.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May takes a question as she addresses the final news conference of the G7 summit in the Charlevoix city of La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada, June 9, 2018. President Trump had announced new tariffs on steel and aluminum, explaining that Canada and European nations had taken advantage of the trade process.

As he flew from Canada to Singapore Saturday night, Trump took to Twitter to label Trudeau "dishonest" and "weak".

"I don't care how mad, how angry you are, you don't treat the head of state of another country like that unless you are getting ready for a military engagement of some kind", he said.

One particular source of his ire recently has been Canada's supply management system, which levels tariffs of up to 300 per cent on imported dairy products. It was very friendly.

Yet, when asked how his administration would approach renegotiations of NAFTA, an agreement that would achieve totally free trade between the USA and its North American allies, Trump suggested that the US would fare better without the agreement at all.

Trump, who has since threatened to impose tariffs on Canada, added: "He learned". The country has rallied together, with public opinion polling showing there's wide support for Canada's retaliatory tariffs against the steel and aluminum duties that will kick in for some USA goods on July 1.

International Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne echoed that sentiment, saying, "We'll continue to do diplomacy the Canadian way, which is to be positive, to be constructive and to make sure we are firm to defend our industries and our workers".

"We've got to look at what supports are available to ensure that if their jobs, their livelihoods are compromised, what can the government do to support these folks".
