Colombia's Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez celebrate after the match.

With James Rodriguez and Juan Quintero providing the ammunition from midfield and all time leading scorer Radamel Falcao opening his World Cup account up front, the Colombians dismantled a physical but limited Poland side.

Any hopes Poland has of getting out of its group after an opening-day defeat surely rest on the Bayern Munich striker, but he will need to be much better than he was against Senegal when he had very little impact.

Falcao, who missed the 2014 World Cup because of a knee injury, made it 2-0 with a 70th-minute goal.

Senegal and Japan face each other three hours earlier and a draw in that clash will mean loss by either Colombia or Poland would result in its elimination. From deep in his own half, Jan Bednarek's long ball found Robert Lewandowski, who showed good control to bring it down and shoot, but David Ospina rushed out and produced a good save with his chest.

Poland entered the World Cup ranked highest of the four teams in Group H at eighth but ended up being the first team out of contention for the knockouts with a lacklustre performance in their first two matches. "We wanted to share this victory with him".

It's a reminder both of Colombia's impressive run in Brazil, with Los Cafeteros nearly knocking out the hosts in the quarterfinal, and Rodriguez's importance to the Colombian national team.

Yerry Mina nodded in James Rodriguez's cross shortly before half-time to put the South Americans ahead. Centre-back Mina rose to the challenge as he climbed highest to power a header beyond a helpless Wojciech Szczesny in the Poland goal.

It said: "Hola mi Hermano James Rodriguez, I remember your great goals during the last World Cup". He formed an excellent partnership with Quintero to create some handsome play for Colombia.

The Poles manufactured a chance against the run of play a few minutes later.

Robert Lewandowski, making his World Cup debut in Russian Federation, struggled with a lack of service throughout, the Bayern Munich striker going closest in the final few minutes when a long-range effort was tipped over by David Ospina.

"Tonight practically we used all our forces that were available when it comes to our offensive playing", Poland coach Adam Nawalka told reporters.
