Uruguay comfortably beat World Cup hosts Russian Federation 3-0 yesterday to seal top spot in Group A courtesy of a Luis Suarez free kick, a Denis Cheryshev own goal and a late Edinson Cavani strike.

In a fast start, Uruguay were ahead inside 10 minutes as Suarez, who scored the victor against Saudi Arabia on matchday two, found the net with a pinpoint free-kick.

It got worse for Stanislav Cherchesov's side when a Diego Laxalt effort from 25 yards was deflected in by Denis Cheryshev, leaving his keeper Igor Akifneev stranded and in the position of having conceded three goals at the tournament without making a save.

Both Russia and Uruguay have already secured places in the next Round of Last 16 of the global football championship, each enjoying wins over opponents in their two previous group stage matches.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia managed their first win in Russian Federation after beating Egypt 2-1 with a last-gasp victor that eclipsed Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah's 22nd minute goal.

With an eye on the next game, Cheryshev - easily Russia's best player on the pitch - was replaced by defender Mario Fernandes, who did offer some stability to the defence.

A 1-0 defeat of Egypt was mirrored against Saudi Arabia but Tabarez's side undoubtedly have more to prove in their last group game.

The coach rejected the notion that Smolov's presence alongside him guaranteed the striker would be starting, and suggested his yellow card when he did come on against Egypt could influence selection decisions, to avoid any potential suspensions for the second round.

Team doctor Eduard Bezuglov said: "After the game against Saudi Arabia, Yuri had a foot tendon injury". The South American team started the match powerfully and quickly opened the scoring.

To compound Russia's problems, Smolnikov was sent off after scything down Laxalt just eight minutes after his first booking.

Their struggles so far mean a shake-up in midfield is likely, with Sampdoria's Lucas Torreira a certain inclusion after impressing as a substitute against the Saudis. "We have good players too, some are better than theirs", the coach said.

Because Russia has the advantage in goal differential, it would win the group with a draw.

Luis Suarez grabbed his second goal of the tournament to open Uruguay's account with a free-kick after 10 minutes when he struck a low free-kick into the bottom corner that should have been easy pickings for Russian Federation keeper Igor Akinfeev.

Cherchesov also says that Russian football players rode roughshod over the beginning of such hard matches as the one against Uruguay was.

Uruguay have won three consecutive World Cup matches against European opposition for the first time since a run of four straight victories between 1950 and 1954.
