Germany's shock World Cup exit another case of the winner's curse

South Korea shocked the football world by defeating Germany 2-0 at the FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation earlier this week, but Son Heung-min, South Korea's star forward, insisted on Friday he and the rest of the team won't stay content.

The message was clear before a game between two sides who have already qualified with victories from their opening fixtures and have identical goal difference.

The Argentines who played in the finals four years ago this time could hardly make it to the knockout stage.

In stark contrast, the paper had used the same headline in 2014, alongside a photo of an elated Kroos, when Germany beat Brazil 7-1 in the World Cup semi-final.

"This team created high expectations because of what we did in qualifying and in friendlies".

"It was not only Ozil, but some other players also did not perform as they usually would".

There is a general feeling Brazil are yet to get out of first gear despite the fact they topped their group with seven points. The 2018 World Cup surely has plenty more exciting and dramatic moments to share with us in the days to come, but here are the most memorable incidents from the group stage.

If Eriksen finds the net against Croatia, he will become the first Danish player to score in both the group and knockout stages of a World Cup since Jesper Olsen in 1986. Modric has scored in two games out of three at Russian Federation 2018, while Eriksen's shoulders carry both Denmark's creative and goalscoring threat.

Coming off a 1998 triumph on home soil, Les Bleus were one of the favourites for the Japan/South Korea World Cup four years later.

"After a European Championship or World Cup, you can judge the work that has been done in the previous two years". Sweden topped the group, and Italy went home.

Spain and Russian Federation played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in a friendly last November, while their last competitive meeting came at the Euro 2008 semi-finals, where the Spaniards ran out 3-0 winners.

Out of shape after the long journey by sea, the Italians played just two matches, losing 3-2 to Sweden before beating Paraguay 2-0. "They've been ahead for about a minute and a half, in total, of their three matches and it's unusual to see them struggle as much as they have".
