DeAndre Jordan opts out of Clippers contract, Mavs a likely destination

The New York Times' Marc Stein reports that the center will be the primary target for the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks almost landed Jordan in free agency three years ago, but he re-signed with the Clippers after several teammates, including Paul and Griffin, virtually held him hostage in his Houston-area home until he reneged on a verbal agreement on a four-year, $87-million contract with Dallas.

The agreement comes three years after Jordan agreed to join Dallas as an unrestricted free agent but changed his mind before a contract could be signed and stayed in Los Angeles. Instead, he's expected to remain a Maverick with the team looking to offer him a new deal, albeit a cheaper one, per Bobby Marks of ESPN via his colleague, Tim McMahon.

Dallas never meant to sign Jordan long-term, and he was fine with that.

Jordan will have to give up a shade under $20 million next year to chase a near-guaranteed National Basketball Association championship, due to the Warriors' payroll already locked up on the aforementioned All-Stars. The deal with Dallas is reportedly approaching the same amount, according to Stein. He was the 35th overall pick (2nd round) in the 2008 draft.

The 29-year-old Jordan averaged 12 points and a career-high 15.2 rebounds in 2017-18. A long-term deal for Jordan, who turns 30 in July, would be a strong sign of that.

Three years after they almost came together, the Mavericks finally get the center they have long coveted.

With Harrison Barnes also on the team, the addition of Jordan would certainly improve their chances of making the playoffs in the west next season. For his career, the Texas A&M product is averaging 9.4 points, 10.7 rebounds and and 1.7 blocks.
