  • Toni Kroos of Germany celebrates scoring his sides winning goal during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia group F match between Germany and Sweden

In a must-win match for the reigning champions, Germany could not live up to the expectations as a resilient South Korea team managed to oust the champions with a 2-0 win.

In an embarrassingly poor performance Germany went behind in the game's closing stages when Kim Young-gwon scored following a video review, with Son Heung-min then breaking away - German keeper Manuel Neuer was by this stage in the South Korean half - to add the second.

It's the first time in at least 80 years that Germany has failed to advance out of the World Cup's group stage.

Loew's side began their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Mexico before rekindling their bid with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Sweden. "Even when it was 0-1, I think we kept trying to turn it all around". The final two matches of Group F in Russia's World Cup had come to their conclusions and once again the holders of the title were on an early flight home. For years to come, Kazan, a city on the Volga River in southwest Russian Federation, will be associated with miracles in South Korea, and with nightmares in Germany. "We will see who feels the less pressure, the less emotional".

Thomas Mueller, one of the heroes from the 2014 win, was rightly dropped from the starting 11 against South Korea but failed to make an impact as he came off the bench.

Germany's team of superstars could only look on in shock in the final minutes of the match as United States referee Mark Geiger called for the video assistant referee to intervene after the unmarked Kim had bundled his shot past Germany 'keeper Manuel Neuer from a corner early in stoppage time.

Wednesday, Germany would suffer a shocking defeat to South Korea, 2-0.

Germany ended up last in Group F while Sweden and Mexico advanced to the round of 16.

Germany: Neuer Kimmich, Hummels, Sula, Hector (Brandt, 78) - Khedira (Gomez 59), Schweinsteiger - Reus, Ozil, Goretzka (Muller, 62) - Werner. Suele made his first World Cup appearance as a replacement for Jerome Boateng. The Swedes won the group on Wednesday after beating Mexico 3-0, but the central Americans also went through.

After failing to find a way past superb Korea 'keeper Jo Hyeonwoo in the second half, Germany could only look on in shock as USA referee Mark Geiger called for the video assistant referee to intervene after the unmarked Kim Younggwon had bundled his shot past Neuer from a corner early in stoppage time.

Loew, who recently signed a contract extension, said he would take time to consider his future.
