76ers reportedly believe they could sign Kawhi Leonard long-term

  • Report: LeBron doesn't have plans to meet with Cavs

And while he's not the best player in the NBA, Kawhi can still vault the Sixers to a formidable powerhouse in the East.

LeBron James' representatives will meet with Philadelphia today and, in addition to an already impressive hand, the Sixers think they have an ace up their sleeve.

With the announcement of LeBron James' decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers and head for Los Angeles with a four-year, $154 million contract in tow, the betting lines have changed seismically in Las Vegas. It doesn't take an expert National Basketball Association observer to know that players, and star players in particular, generally love playing in Los Angeles. Going to the Lakers is not quite as safe - he is joining a storied franchise with championship expectations and he will have to battle Golden State and Houston just for the chance to compete for another ring. Both L.A. and Northern Ohio are home to James, and he has no such connection with the City of Brotherly Love. The Spurs have reportedly targeted the Boston Celtics' rising start Jayson Tatum, with Kyrie Irving possibly in the mix, too.

The Lakers have agreed to free-agent deals with guards Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Lance Stephenson and veteran center JaVale McGee, league sources told ESPN.

Whether Philly has the assets to acquire Leonard is up for debate.

"Leonard - a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and two-time First-Team All-NBA selection - possesses the shooting prowess to play on or off the ball, and would seem to be an ideal fit with James", according to Yahoo Sports.

The Spurs have always been most intrigued with Boston's trade assets, but it remains unclear how rich of a package the Celtics are willing to offer without a full understanding of the long-term implications of Leonard's quadriceps injury, or an assurance that they can be certain of Leonard's willingness to consider a long-term commitment next summer, league sources said. Philadelphia would risk losing him in 2019 when he can become a free agent.
