Philadelphia 76ers to meet with reps for LeBron James

  • Basketball: Free agent fireworks set to begin for NBA teams

Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman spoke to both James and Paul on the phone when National Basketball Association free agency officially opened at 12:01 a.m. ET Sunday, sources told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

The meeting with the 76ers was first reported by ESPN.

Another team that made a pitch to James, the Philadelphia 76ers, got their chance on Sunday to appeal to James to relocate to southeast Pennsylvania. He could ink a short-term deal, which he's done since coming back to the Cavs.

Free agency begins at 12:01 a.m. ET Sunday, and the balance of power in the National Basketball Association could shift if James chooses to leave Cleveland and create a new superteam with the Los Angeles Lakers or join a burgeoning power such as the Houston Rockets or Philadelphia 76ers. Furthermore, DeAndre Jordan signed a one-year deal with the Mavericks, so he's not in play for the Lakers, either. Philadelphia would instantly vault from conference contender to favourite with James, who could make a strong run at his ninth straight Finals in year one.

James officially became an unrestricted free agent when he declined the player option on the final year of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. Keep in mind, the Lakers will also be able to add some veterans willing to sign for the minimum if James end up in Los Angeles.

Lakers president Magic Johnson said earlier this week that if he can't deliver superstars via trades or the free agent market within two years, he will step down. George told a party in Oklahoma City that he's staying with the Thunder, after agreeing to terms on what is a $137 million, four-year deal that comes with an option for the final season.

Los Angeles is believed to be the first stop for James on his free agency tour.

They could still open up more cap sspace by waiving and stretching Luol Deng and/or renouncing the rights to restricted free agent Julius Randle. For three of those seasons, James teamed with Kyrie Irving, a perennial All-Star, to form one of the league's most fearsome duos.

Firstly, media members had somehow gotten tracking details for his flight from Anguilla to Van Nuys Airport, which led to a flurry of photographers and reporters lining the fences of the runway awaiting his arrival. The 33-year-old had previously said he wanted to finish his career in OH, and although he's leaving again, Cavs fans are more forgiving after he ended the city's 52-year sport title drought in 2016. In my opinion, joining either of those clubs would give James a much better opportunity to overthrow his arch rivals in Golden State.

While it could seem like the Cavs are in for a relatively quiet free-agency period outside of the James pursuit, the summer was preceded by a bevy of activity arranged by general manager Koby Altman, from trading for Hood, Larry Nance Jr.
