  • UN Warns of Humanitarian Catastrophe if Fighting Escalates in Daraa, Syria

In Washington, a State Department official said the United Sattes could not confirm the truce report, and the situation in southern Syria remained "grim" with Russian Federation and Syrian government forces continuing to bomb the area.

Opposition activists reported violence, even during a 12-hour truce that was reportedly brokered by Russian Federation and Jordan and went into effect at midnight Thursday, saying more than 100,000 people have fled their homes since the government offensive began on June 19.

For the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, the retaking the whole of Daraa province would be a key symbolic victory for the regime, as it is seen as the cradle of the anti-Assad uprising seven years ago that spiralled into civil war.

In another development, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, the head of UN Human Right Commission, has on Friday, warned of a looming "catastrophe" in southern Syria as it raised the number of people fleeing a fierce government offensive to 160,000.

"Meanwhile AFP reports that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres issued a new call on Friday for 'an immediate cessation" to military operations in southwest Syria "where the government forces are attacking rebel-held areas".

The government's offensive so far has focused on Deraa province, which borders Jordan, but not Quneitra province abutting the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Syrian troops have seized a swathe of rebel territory northeast of Deraa city.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's offensive in the southwest aims to reclaim one of two remaining rebel strongholds in Syria, the other being Idlib and adjacent areas in the northwest.

The current pro-government push to retake southwestern Syria is the largest assault on opposition-held territory there since a de-escalation deal brokered by the United States, Russia and Jordan came into effect in July 2017.

Almost 100 civilians have been killed since the assault began on June 19 with airstrikes, rocket fire and crude barrel bombs.

These include around 20,000 to areas near the Naseeb border crossing with Jordan, a country that already hosts more than 650,000 registered Syrian refugees and says the actual figure is closer to 1.3 million. Last week, rebels said the United States had told them not to expect any American military support.

Smoke rises above a town east of the city of Daraa during air strikes by Syrian regime forces on June 30, 2018.

"We are moving in all directions and with all the parties to bring a ceasefire and protect civilians", he said on Twitter on Saturday.

The war has been going Assad's way since Russian Federation intervened on his side in 2015, when he held just a fraction of the country.

Since the operation started two years ago, the military says it has delivered more than 1,500 tons of food, 250 tons of clothing and almost a million litres of fuel.
