Hosts Russia take on Spain in the third Round of 16 tie of Fifa World Cup 2018 in Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow on Sunday, July 1.

With Russia withdrawing Dzyuba, the hosts played the last half hour of normal time without anyone left upfield as an outlet, with all 10 outfield players content to sit even deeper as Spain continued their possession domination. In the end, the fate of vouchers in the quarter-finals decided on penalty shootout, the results of which the national team of Russian Federation and won.

Akinfeev pulled off two saves in Russia's 4-3 shootout win against Spain, the second of which from Iago Aspas involved a stunning stop with his outstretched left leg while diving to his right.

"Thank God, we were lucky, that's it", said the keeper, who like his counterpart at the other end, David de Gea, had had little to break sweat over for the preceding 120 minutes.

"I just feel emptied out", Akinfeev said. Spain is certainly one of the biggest contenders for the World Cup this year, and they should have enough to see off the hosts.

At the height of the Cold War, Spain beat the Soviet Union 2-1 in the 1964 European Championship final, a game which took on extra symbolism as a battle between the Soviets and Spain's staunchly anti-communist dictatorship under Francisco Franco.

Russia's Alexander Yerokhin has become the first player to be brought on as a fourth substitute during a World Cup game, going on in the 97th minute against Spain.

In the end he needed only four after Akinfeev's heroics completed one of the all-time great World Cup backs-to-the-wall performances and sent Russian Federation into the quarter-finals.

Russian Federation - the lowest ranked team in the World Cup at No. 70 in the world - is stunningly going to the quarterfinals to face Croatia on Saturday. "I think that we did this but we can't stop at this (victory)". Lopetegui was sacked because he didn't tell Spain's soccer leaders he accepted an offer to coach Real Madrid after the tournament.

Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez were the twin hearts of Spain's rise, offensive metronomes who elevated tiki-taka to supremacy at Barcelona and Spain.

"We're insanely happy", Dzyuba said.

Thiago Silva has backed Neymar to follow in the footsteps of Paris St Germain team-mates Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani by shining in the World Cup knockout stages.

Russia's goal came from such a play when Dzyuba's header struck the outstretched arm of Spain defender Gerard Pique.

Spain were dominating possession but complacency edged into their game and the next big chance fell to Russian Federation in the 36th minute, Golovin bending a shot wide after Dzyuba held off Ramos to win a header.

Russian Federation next play Croatia in the quarter-finals in Sochi on Sunday morning (Singapore time) and Russian Federation coach Stanislav Cherchesov believes his team have yet to peak. Denis Cheryshev, Aleksandr Golovin, Sergei Ignashevich and Fedor Smolov converted each of Russia's four efforts from the spot.
