President Trump issued a proclamation Tuesday ordering flags flown at half-staff on federal buildings to honor the five victims of the Capital Gazette shooting in Annapolis, Md., the White House said. The proclamation came after Annapolis' mayor said his request to lower flags had been denied.

The White House said Mr Trump ordered the flags lowered as soon as he learned of the Annapolis mayor's request.

Our Nation shares the sorrow of those affected by the shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.

Sanders said she spoke to Buckley Monday night to inform him of the President's decision, adding that she was "not sure about the process" which led to Buckley's claim that his request was initially denied.

"It's a terrible situation, but I think it's the least respect we could give the journalists", Buckley said.

"Americans across the country are united in calling upon God to be with the victims and to bring aid and comfort to their families and friends". The mayor said he hoped having the American flags lowered would help keep national attention on the attack.

Buckley told The Baltimore Sun Monday: "Obviously, I'm disappointed, you know?". Is there a cutoff for tragedy? "It's just as important as any other tragedy", said Buckley. Jarrod W. Ramos has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder in their killings.

The victims included Rob Hiaasen, 59, the paper's assistant managing editor; Gerald Fischman, 61, the editorial page editor; Wendi Winters, 65, a features reporter; 56-year-old sports reporter John McNamara and Rebecca Smith, 34, a sales assistant.

Trump has repeatedly called journalists the "enemy of the people".
