  • Forecasters reverse course, predict below-average 2018 hurricane season

Tropical Storm Beryl formed Thursday afternoon over the tropical Atlantic. The storm could gain tropical storm strength, in which case it would be named Beryl.

The Atlantic hurricane season typically begins to peak in August and September and will end on November 30. Tropical Depression Two was, however, expected to dissipate east of the Lesser Antilles over the weekend, the NHC said. "The cold water could have profound impacts on this year's hurricane season, since warm water is the fuel source for tropical storms".

Disorganized showers and thunderstorms located a few hundred miles to the southwest of Bermuda are associated with a weak trough of low pressure.

The NHC said satellites indicate a small area of low pressure and a tropical wave between the Cabo Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles.

"At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Beryl was located near latitude 10.3 North, longitude 42.8 West. Beryl is moving toward the west near 16 miles per hour (26 km/h)".

There is no indication the depression will form into a hurricane, much less strike Florida or Indian River County, according to forecasters. Regardless of weakening, an increase in rain chances will occur for the Lesser Antilles followed by an increase in rain chances for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands on Sunday into Monday.

In its most recent forecast, the Climate Prediction Center gave a 50 percent chance of an El Niño forming in late summer or early fall.
