Kyl's registered lobbying clients this year have included Qualcomm Inc., JW Aluminum, mining company Freeport-McMoRan, the Coalition for American Retirement and the private equity investor Gordon Sondland, who is co-founder of Aspen Capital, according to congressional lobbying disclosures.

Trump defeated Clinton's wife, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 presidential election and has disparaged both Clintons.

Trump tweeted Sunday that he will announce his pick on Monday at 9 p.m. EDT. All of the folks that you mentioned have strong histories of making decisions in opposition to abortion access.

Those views could have implications for independent counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of President Trump.

Since his appointment to the Court of Appeals, Kavanaugh has not ruled in any cases involving abortion or gay so-called marriage, something conservatives hope the Supreme Court will revisit.

U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby described Kavanaugh's nomination as "an excellent choice".

"No president has ever consulted more widely, or talked with more people from more backgrounds to seek input about a Supreme Court nomination", Kavanaugh said of Trump. "Vulnerable senators up for reelection this year have a choice: Stand with the president and their constituents ... or cave to pressure from the extreme abortion lobby".

"This incredibly qualified nominee deserves a swift confirmation and robust, bipartisan support", Trump said. But Indiana's Joe Donnelly, North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp and West Virginia's Joe Manchin all say they won't attend. If the decision is made permanent, it would lead to higher premiums. The president of the Supreme Court Malgorzata Gersdorf, who is 65, has refused to resign, declaring: "I'm doing this to defend the rule of law and to testify to the truth about the line between the Constitution and the violation of the Constitution".

Kennedy's replacement also could be more willing to allow states to carry out executions and could support undoing earlier court holdings in the areas of racial discrimination in housing and the workplace.

President Donald Trump made his final decision to nominate Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Sunday night.

Kavanaugh is likely to be more conservative than Justice Kennedy on a range of social issues.

President Trump's success in confirming conservative judges, as well as a Supreme Court justice, has cheered Republicans amid concerns about his limited policy achievements and chaotic management style.

Kavanaugh is federal appellate judge on the D.C. Circuit, and during his confirmation hearing in May 2006, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) asked if he considered Roe v. Wade "an abomination".

One Democrat up for re-election, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, announced Monday he would oppose any nominee from Trump's list of 25 possible candidates, drafted by conservative groups.

Similar sentiments were shared by Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks. "Now, I urge the Senate to get to work and confirm our nominee".

"In nominating Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump has followed through on his threat to nominate a justice who would undermine LGBTQ equality, women's reproductive rights and affordable healthcare", said HRC President Chad Griffin. "A judge must interpret statutes as written, and a judge must interpet the Constitution as written".

Trump is set to announce his nominee to fill the seat of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy in a prime-time televised address Monday.

"We are hopeful that Susan Collins does not want her legacy to be putting somebody on the bench for the next 30 or 40 years who will undermine the things she has professed to fight for throughout her career", said Daniel Goldberg, legal director at the Alliance for Justice, a liberal advocacy group. "I'm going to be supportive of our leader and move this process forward", she added.
