Boris Johnson not dealing in reality over Brexit, says Micheál Martin

  • Tory MPs prepare to mount May leadership push

UK's new Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt today said he would be "four square" behind the embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May as her new-look Cabinet met for the first time after a string of resignations over her Brexit strategy left her government in crisis.

In his resignation letter to May, Johnson accused her waving "white flags" of surrender in negotiations with European Union leaders.

But Mr Davis said a leadership challenge would be the "wrong thing to do" and insisted he believed Mrs May was a "good prime minister".

Described by news site BirminghamLive as the "most popular potential replacement for Theresa May", Home Secretary Javid is widely regarded as one of the front runners for the top role.

But for a brief time, it appeared that Theresa May had finally silenced the bickering and stopped the backstabbing over Brexit on July 6 following a day-long cabinet meeting at her country residence, Chequers.

Many pro-Brexit lawmakers are furious at a plan they say will stop Britain forging an independent economic course.

If a number of would-be leaders are nominated, the list is whittled down to a shortlist of two by MPs before being put to party members in the country.

While ministers have emphatically ruled out a national referendum on the final Brexit deal, demands are growing for a "People's Vote" to allow the public to decide whether to leave on the terms obtained by the Government or remain in the EU.

Mr Gove, who led the Leave campaign alongside Mr Johnson, has given his backing to the agreed plans but there is little doubt he will have been disappointed by great swathes of the proposal.

The former home secretary Amber Rudd accused Mr Johnson of "backseat driving" in the Brexit negotiations in September past year.

Mr Johnson's almost two years as foreign secretary was not without controversy, with the ambitious Tory heavyweight having been accused of undermining Mrs May on more than one occasion - and making headlines for other reasons.

May's Conservative opponents could trigger a leadership contest if at least 48 MPs support it, but to actually formally force her from office, 159 MPs would have to vote against her - a figure hardliners may not be able to reach.

Asked Tuesday whether May should be replaced as prime minister, Trump said it was "up to the people, not up to me."I get along with her very well, I have a very good relationship", he said".

If Mrs May holds on as leader and manages to rally her troops behind the Brexit plan agreed by the Cabinet at Chequers last week, she still faces the tough challenge of winning the European Union over to her proposals.

Johnson quit Monday with an incendiary letter accusing May of killing "the Brexit dream" and flying "white flags" of surrender in negotiations with the European Union.

At a meeting with Conservative lawmakers on Monday, she was cheered and applauded by many, having warned them that internal squabbling could pave the way for socialist opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn to take power instead.

Widespread protests are planned across the UK.

Both MPs pointed to the Northern Ireland backstop, which the government signed up to in December, as a key part of how the government had ended up with what they argued was an unacceptable compromise.

She said the deal agreed by the Cabinet after their "productive discussions" would "honour the result of the referendum" and allow the United Kingdom to "take back control of our borders, our law and our money".

Candidates for the leadership must be nominated by two Conservative MPs.
