  • Eight boys rescued from cave in northern Thailand

Thai officials say four boys were brought out of a flooded cave in northern Thailand on Monday. The rescued boys are still being held in quarantine for testing and have not been able to have direct contact with their parents yet.

Heavy rain has been intermittent in the region over the last three days but further downpours could disrupt the removal of the remaining boys and their coach.

This is the third mission that has been undertaken by the Thai authorities in order to rescue the young boys, who became trapped in the cave by rising floodwater several weeks ago.

The submarine is named "Wild Boar" after the name of the football team. Jedsada said they were uncertain what type of infections the boys could face "because we have never experienced this kind of issue from a deep cave".

The boys' ordeal has transfixed millions of people, as a massive rescue effort was planned and mounted.

The rest four boys and their coach that are still trapped in the cave will be pulled out in a final mission that has resumed on Tuesday.

The remaining five members of the Thai soccer team will be rescued today, officials have confirmed.

He added that the divers were the "same multinational team" that rescued the four boys on Sunday. 'They were hungry this morning and wanted to eat khao pad grapao, ' Mr Narongsak said, referring to a Thai meat and rice dish.

The eight rescued boys are healthy are in 'high spirits.' They are under constant medical supervision to eliminate any risk of infection.

Narongsak Osottanakorn, head of the rescue operation, said a team of divers went back into the cave Monday morning, local time. "We can see that everything is okay as they're eating well", said Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong, Inspector General of the Public Health Ministry.

Rescuers began the operation at 4am United Kingdom time and are determined to get them out of the Tham Luang Cave in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, before monsoon rains that could last until October make any evacuation impossible.

The third and hopefully final rescue mission is now underway.

The ups and downs of the rescue bid have entranced Thailand and also fixated a global audience, drawing comments of support from celebrities as varied as US President Donald Trump, football star Lionel Messi and tech guru Elon Musk. It is now unclear whether Musk or his technology will be used in the rescue efforts, but Musk confirmed via tweet that the submarine is in Thailand and ready to be used if needed. "Leaving here in case it may be useful in the future", he tweeted Monday.
