  • Israel will not ‘rule out’ ties with Syrian govt – Defence minister

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian Federation on Wednesday that Israel would not seek to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad but that Moscow should encourage Iranian forces to quit Syria, a senior Israeli official said.

Israel seized a large swathe of the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, in a move never recognised by the global community.

A senior Republican lawmaker on Thursday warned Israel against striking a deal with Russian Federation on the future of Iranian forces in Syria at the expense of the United States' interests in the country.

Syrian state media said the missiles targeted positions around Hader village in the southern province of Quneitra, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

So in addition to discussing the fluid situation in Syria, the two leaders are expected to deal with other issues, and the inter-connectivity between them, such as the significance of the US withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal; how to get Iran to exit Syria; the sanctions on Russian Federation as a result of the Ukrainian issue; and US President Donald Trump's long-awaited ideas for a Mideast peace plan.

Putin has developed warm relations with Israel even while backing Iran and intervening in the Syrian civil war since 2015, helping Assad to turn the tide in favor of government forces.

Israel did not comment on this bombing, but it was believed that their air force was targeting the T-4 Airport's barracks because of an alleged Iranian military presence.

During the weekly cabinet on Sunday, Netanyahu said he will fly to Moscow for an "important meeting" with Putin.

"We are still looking into why it crossed - whether it was on a military mission and crossed on objective, or it strayed", said Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman. A series of strikes in Syria that have killed Iranians have been attributed to Israel in recent months.

"Their use of military force in Syria would inevitably lead to an escalation of tensions across the entire Middle East region", he said.

However, Netanyahu does not need to travel to the Kremlin to tell Putin Jerusalem's positions.
