MAPPED Lubeck is a small city in northern Germany

Firefighters attend passengers of a bus in Luebeck, northern Germany, Friday, July 20, 2018 after a man attacked people inside.

The Lübecker Nachrichten newspaper wrote that 2 of the 14 people wounded were in serious condition and that the suspected perpetrator had been apprehended. Hingst said it wasn't clear whether it belonged to the suspect, but said there had been reports of smoke coming out of it.

The local Luebecker Nachrichten, without citing its source, said the attacker was originally from Iran who now had German nationality and had lived in Luebeck for years.

He was shot dead by Italian police in Milan four days later while on the run.

Horrified witnesses told how the attacker boarded the packed bus and randomly attacked passengers with a kitchen knife, seriously wounding two people. "For that reason we have, as the investigation now stands, no indications that there was a terrorist background to this act".

Earlier, police in Schleswig-Holstein tweeted that there was a major police deployment under way in the city.

Police quoted by national news agency DPA said there were no fatalities, and did not give a motive for the assault.

A suspect has been arrested after the incident in the Kuecknitz district of the city, north-east of Hamburg.

German police said there was no indication that the attacker was politically radicalised. "The perpetrator was overpowered and is now in police custody".

No motive has been ascertained for the attack. "There were no dead", the police and prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Video surveillance footage from the bus led to suspicion that he wanted to set fire to the vehicle, thereby injuring as many people as possible and potentially killing some.
