Trump Administration to Invite Putin to Visit Washington in Fall

  • RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin has rounded on United States critics of his first bilateral summit with President Donald Trump

WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he looked forward to his second meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, insisting that the first meeting was a success despite howls of criticism at home and overseas.

The backlash has thrust Trump onto the defensive, leading to days of conflicting statements from both the president and the White House.

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Trump accused the "fake news media" of pushing U.S. confrontation with Russian Federation, adding "they ... hate the fact that I'll probably have a good relationship with Putin". Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., that would support intelligence agency assessments that Russian Federation interfered with the USA elections in 2016 and shield the Mueller probe from "interference".

But beyond the controversy over Trump's remarks, there were broad unanswered questions as to what - if anything - was agreed during his one-on-one discussions with Putin in Helsinki.

"As Brian Bennett writes in this week's cover story, 'A year and a half into his presidency, Trump's puzzling affinity for Putin has yet to be explained".

He said that with all the differences between Russian Federation and the United States, the two leaders agreed that bilateral relations are in an "extremely unsatisfactory state" and in various aspects they are even worse than during the Cold War. They are pushing so recklessly hard and hate the fact that I'll probably have a good relationship with Putin. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), charging it was an affront to diplomatic efforts and a sign that "Trump derangement syndrome has official come to the Senate".

Speaking to a conference of Russian diplomats in Moscow today, the Russian president described the summit this week in Helsinki as successful overall. "The sentence should have been: 'I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russian Federation'".

The White House later said the U.S. president had been saying "no" to further questions from reporters and that the threat to the USA electoral system "still exists".

Current U.S. law prohibits coordination and collaboration with the Russian military, as stipulated in the National Defense Authorization Act following Russia's 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula.

His unfounded assertions come days after a summit with Putin in Helsinki, after which Trump was widely condemned for seeming to side with Putin over USA intelligence officials, who have concluded that Russian Federation interfered in the US 2016 presidential election. He cited USA sanctions and the expulsion of alleged Russian spies from the US, telling reporters that Putin "understands it, and he's not happy about it".

Trump, in Twitter postings on July 19, also criticized media coverage of the meeting with Putin. "Problem is", Trump said.

Hours later, the White House stepped in to say Trump's answer wasn't what it appeared.

Since the press conference, Trump has refined and sharpened his response.

The intelligence briefing was held at Trump Tower.

"Nobody is saying or excusing Russia's meddling in our elections - absolutely, we should protect the integrity of our elections", Paul said.
