  • War with Iran is the mother of all wars, Rouhani tells Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a Twitter threat against Iran and their president Hassan Rouhani.

He also confirmed that Washington wants all countries to reduce their imports of Iranian oil "as close to zero as possible" by 4 November, part of USA efforts to increase economic pressure on Tehran.

As CNN's New Day covered President Donald Trump's explosive late-night tweet threatening Iran, the morning show concluded: this is a means to distract from his bad week.

In a televised speech, Hassan Rouhani told the American president: "Do not play with the lion's tail, you will regret it forever".

The 2015 deal places restrictions on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for billions of dollars in sanctions relief.

"You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran's security and interests", Rouhani said, in an apparent reference to reports of efforts by Washington to destabilise Iran's Islamic government.

Rouhani had said Sunday that "American must understand well that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace and war with Iran is the mother of all wars".

Trump has long-promised to take a hard line against Iran. Trump's last message prior to his threat to Iran on Twitter was also in reference to President Obama.

"The level of corruption and wealth among Iranian leaders shows that Iran is run by something that resembles the mafia more than a government", Pompeo said. The agency, a government mouthpiece, also said Monday that Trump's comment was only mimicking and copying Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who had in the past warned the West to "never threaten an Iranian".

But he said the Iranian "people and the armed forces will stand up against our enemies and will not come up short".

Iran has rejected talks with the US, and Rouhani has accused the USA of stoking an "economic war".

A high-ranking Iranian officer says President Donald Trump's warning of unprecedented "consequences" for Iran, should it threaten the United States, is nothing but "psychological warfare".

While 55 percent of Iranian Americans wanted Washington to work to advance democracy and civil rights in Iran, they were more divided on how a U.S. administration should go about achieving this.

Germany is calling for restraint amid escalating rhetoric between the leaders of Iran and the United States. Pompeo promised USA aid to Iranians who would rise up against their government officials, whom he said were "merely polished front men for the ayatollahs' worldwide con artistry".

In naming Iranian officials who have amassed fortunes while the people struggle, Pompeo cited "thieving thug" Sadeq Larijani, head of the Iranian Judiciary, who he said is now worth $300 million.
