"We were always in control", Thomas said.

"You don't know if he is suffering or pacing himself".

It was not the first time Moscon has fallen foul of race officials.

Though talented, Moscon is reaching a point where he may be more trouble than he is worth.

But the 32-year-old's dream of upstaging the four-time champion Froome to become the Tour's first Welsh victor is being challenged on all fronts.

In September a year ago, Moscon was disqualified from the UCI World Championships road race when video emerged of him taking a tow from the Italian team vehicle after he was caught up in a crash on the penultimate lap. The air of tension surrounding the team has been a central theme, with the governing bodies and several riders from Team Sky and other squads calling on those at the roadside to respect the race and those taking part.

Thomas enters with a 1 minute, 39 second advantage over teammate Chris Froome, the four-time champion. Froome has said his training plan was designed for him to come good in the last week.

"I've got young staff - our mechanic's 21".

Team Sky's Thomas was seen wiping his eyes while Sagan used his water bottles to wash his eyes. "Then we slowed down and I hit the ground". "You would have to ask the public, and maybe it's a reflection of the way we're perceived in the French media".

"You can say it was too early, but there were some big guys behind".

While Thomas was riding to victory, there was the fascinating sight of Froome staying behind to cover counter-attacks from Romain Bardet and Nairo Quintana.

Mitchelton-Scott's Luke Durbridge used Twitter to describe some of the behaviour on Saturday as "disgraceful" - comments which were appreciated by the four-time Tour victor.

Valverde believes Sky cold pay for their efforts over the first 15 stages, but hopes friends with common goals can come to Movistar's aid as well. "A lot of guys are speaking out about it now, the riders are sick and exhausted of it".

Froome said he sees his younger self in his precocious partner.

Nonetheless last week Froome and other Team Sky riders were targeted by a flare, while the four-time champion was reportedly spat at and pushed by road-side spectators.

"The road should remain free, we are not going to lock the riders in a stadium or on a tennis court", he said. "I wouldn't give it up for any money".

Team Sunweb's Dumoulin bridged over to the Spaniard on the descent off the Cormet de Roseland before leaving him behind on the climb to the finish, while Sky kept their powder dry until the finale. Obviously I want to wear it as long as possible.

Speaking of Froome's form peaking in the third week, Wiggins reasserted that '10 days into the Giro everyone thought Chris was going to climb off and go home.
