  • Trump Tapping $12B to Help Farmers Affected by Tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump walks up the driveway prior to delivering remarks at a showcase of American-made products at the White House in Washington, U.S., July 23, 2018.

While promoting the global negations, Mr. Trump praised his hard-line trade strategy, saying slapping tariffs if the U.S.is treated unfairly is "simple". The rollout of billions of dollars in aid on Tuesday will be the first action Trump has taken to protect farmers from the whiplash they have had to face in recent months.

The Trump administration readied a plan Tuesday to send billions in emergency aid to farmers who have been caught in the crossfire of President Donald Trump's trade disputes with China and other US trading partners.

It also comes amid recent reports that Mexico is aiming to reach a deal on the North American Free Trade Agreement with the USA and Canada by the end of August to take some of the heat off incoming President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The official Trump administration line right now is that the trade war he's launched against China, the European Community and others is a total no-brainer, and simply a matter of Uncle Sam deciding to stop being Uncle Sucker. In 2017, Chinese imports to the US totaled around $5.05 billion. But in response to American tariffs, Beijing imposed its own on soybeans, in addition to other American agricultural products.

Punishing tariffs have been introduced on imported goods from Canada, China, and the EU. One week later, autoworkers, foreign ambassadors, and lawmakers spoke out against new potential tariffs against imported cars and auto parts. But conservative critics of the White House's approach said on Tuesday that Trump's move to offer rescue funds to farmers suggests the standoff with other countries won't end soon.

Using government power to dig economic holes and then fill them up: isn't that what it means to Make America Great Again?

Trump's tweet comes as he is scheduled to meet with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Washington tomorrow for talks aimed at heading off a trade war.

Politico, citing two sources familiar with the plan, also reported the administration will pay for billions in trade-related aid through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's broad authority and two commodity support programs in a farm bill under consideration in Congress.
