Vettel was in control of his home race and looked set to take a major championship advantage over Lewis Hamilton, but shunted his Ferrari into the wall on Lap 51 and now trails his race-winning title rival by 17 points in the standings.

"The most trying day and the greatest day".

Beaten by Vettel in his home British Grand Prix at Silverstone two weeks ago, where he went from pole to the back of the field and up to second, he had turned the tables completely.

With excitement oozing out of Hamilton from the final lap to the champagne podium spray, he concluded on Twitter: 'I wish I could describe this feeling right now...

Stewards took into consideration the fact that the incident happened when the safety auto was deployed and at a time of confusion on the pit wall. Driving from the back is always more fun than driving from the front but you never know how far you can go. "When we took the decision in favour of Valtteri for 2019, it wasn't just about his undoubted speed and work ethic, but also a question of character".

But, it was the rain and the safety vehicle towards the end, that made sure the race ended in a dramatic fashion and changed the entire course of this competition.

When the race resumed, Mercedes held their breath as Hamilton and Bottas went wheel-to-wheel for the lead before they called off the fight as the team sealed a one-two finish on home turf.

"I've never had a race like this, " Hamilton said.

"I realised quickly that it was over", said Vettel, who again played down his mistake. "That's why I said at the end that "love conquers all" (on the radio after the race)". Hamilton was told to pit, then was told that Kimi Raikkonen is pitting so he needs to stay out, which was followed by the instructions to get 'in, in, in!' just when he cut across the grass at the beginning of the pit lane and returned to the track.

"It was a huge mistake and it had a huge impact on the race because we retired", Vettel said.

"I had it in my hands - small mistake, big disappointment", said the German. And I really feel that the rain's come down and just washed away any negativity. It was one of those moments.

Furthermore, archrival Sebastian Vettel was on pole position in a supremely quick Ferrari and gunning to extend his championship lead.

The race began in sweltering conditions with an air temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, or 80 Fahrenheit, and the track at 43 with humidity at 50 per cent and rainclouds looming all around.
