A man has been arrested for fatally stabbing a woman and wounding another on a California train, in what appeared to be a random attack, officials say. On Monday night he was arrested about a dozen miles from the Oakland station where the attack took place.

Lahtifa Wilson and Nia Wilson were stabbed by John Cowell while transferring trains at the MacArthur BART station in Oakland, California late Sunday.

Surveillance video on the train and at the station's platform showed Cowell had been riding the same auto as the sisters Sunday, but they did not interact, Rojas said.

BART Police Chief Carlos Rojas called it "one of the most vicious attacks I've ever seen".

Rojas says surveillance video shows Cowell attacked the sisters quickly, stabbing them after they exited a train.

"It basically happened at the snap of the fingers, at the drop of the pin", he said, adding that the attack was "the most vicious" he had seen in his almost 30-year police career.

Rojas said surveillance cameras recorded the attack and the suspect changing clothes.

He recently had finished a two-year prison sentence for a conviction of a 2016 second-degree robbery case, his most serious crime to date at the time.

Nia Wilson's death was the third involving an attack in the BART system in five days, making it one of the deadliest weeks in the system's history.

Hundreds of protesters gathered for a vigil and rally at MacArthur BART for Nia Wilson, an 18-year-old African American girl who was stabbed to death by a white man in Oakland on June 22.

"I'm just so sad for my baby".

She said the agency is conducting a review and also co-operating with BART and local law enforcement in their investigation.

BART Police Chief Carolos Rojas told reporters Monday night that Cowell had no previous interactions with the sisters before he came behind them, swiftly stabbing Nia twice in the neck before turning the knife on Letifah in what he described as a "prison-yard type of attack". Cowell reportedly approached Wilson and her sister and slashed their throats with a knife. "That's probably why she was out really enjoying herself (Sunday night)".

Sadly, Nia was killed in the attack. Her sister, 26-year-old Letifah Wilson, was wounded.

"We haven't connected him with any radical group or white supremacist group or anything like that", Rojas said.

Daryle Allums of the group "Stop Killing Our Kids", and the godfather of Nia Wilson, initiated a prayer circle, calling for peace and justice at the BART station.

As noted by the Chronicle, a GoFundMe has now been set up by Nia Wilson's family seeking to raise $9,000.

He says police are looking for the suspect fled the station. Cowell had a tattoo on his chest and a bandage on his forehead, she said. "They asked him what his name was. That's what we're out here doing, supporting our family". Police are seeking the other man.

Police said there was a dispute between multiple people, and officers detained two individuals.

A day before the Wilson sisters were stabbed, Don Stevens, 47, was "cold-clocked" on the side of his head by an unidentified man after he got into an argument with another person on the train, Rojas said. Bey was arrested shortly after the attack and remains in custody.
