Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

However, temperatures today are expected to peak above 30°C again, before dipping overnight.

There were 56 fires on grass verges next to England's motorways and major A-roads in the 10 days to Wednesday, according to the road maintenance body.

The relentless heat has baked the United Kingdom for weeks, and the intense pressure will cause thunder this afternoon.

Highest temperatures are expected in the southeast of England.

Temperatures were around 21C in parts of East Anglia and London past midnight.

The Environmental Audit Committee also encouraged employers to relax dress codes, allow flexible working during warm weather and changing building regulations to prevent people from overheating.

Forecasters say there will be some sunshine but there is a risk of "significant" thunderstorms this afternoon, and the Met Office has issued a weather warning from 2pm until 11.45pm.

Britons sweltered in a prolonged heatwave on Thursday (July 26), with temperatures set to test national records, the Meteorological Office said.

On Saturday, any thunderstorms are expected to clear away, though there may be some showers, with much cooler temperatures of 23C to 26C likely.

"Large hail, frequent lightning and strong and gusty winds will be additional hazards".

"There is the potential for thunderstorms to develop during Friday afternoon, lasting well into the evening and perhaps developing into a larger area of rain", said the Met Office.

Tonight will be humid with possible thunderstorms breaking out.

Sweden has experiences their hottest summer for a century and Finland's usual summer highs of 18 degrees have been dwarfed by temperatures reaching 30 degrees.
