The Chicago Cubs have agreed to trade for Texas Rangers southpaw Cole Hamels. The Cubs stepped up their efforts on Thursday after losing out on lefty J.A. Happ, who was traded by the Toronto Blue Jays to the New York Yankees. He has made 12 starts and six relief appearances in 2018, posting a 2.45 ERA with 94 strikeouts and 24 walks in 80.2 innings in low-A and high-A combined.

The 34-year-old Hamels is 5-9 with a 4.72 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 20 starts this season. For his career, Hamels, a four-time all-star, is 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA in October and was the most valuable player of both the NL Championship Series and World Series in 2008 as the ace of the Phillies. He's given up 16 home runs over 59 innings at home and 7 home runs over 55 1/3 innings on the road.

Hamels, who had been scheduled to start for Texas on Saturday in Houston, will instead travel then to join the Cubs for the rest of their series in St. Louis.

The Cubs, meantime, had been unable to solve their own rotation woes, with Yu Darvish out of action since late May and Tyler Chatwood seemingly incapable of completing six innings. While they missed out on him in 2015 when he no-hit the Cubs at Wrigley Field, they were able to win the sweepstakes this time around.

The trade was reported yesterday, and Cole Hamels gave his now-former Rangers teammates hugs as he left the ballpark during the game against the A's, but now the Cole Hamels trade is official. The Cubs were part of the group and one of the teams that aren't on his no-trade list.

Hamels carried a 3.61 ERA at the end of June, before a rough July (1-3, 11.12 ERA) sent his ERA climbing and his price dropping.
