Israel will build hundreds of new settlement homes in response to the killing of an Israeli father by a Palestinian teenager in the occupied West Bank, Israel's defence minister said.

Mohammad Tareq Yousef, 17, who killed an Israeli man and injured two others in a terrorist attack at the settlement of Adam outside Jerusalem on July 26, 2018, and was shot dead.

Clashes broke out between young Palestinians and soldiers firing teargas during the raid.

"The best answer to terrorism is the expansion of settlements", Mr Lieberman said.

Some 300 Palestinians - majority assailants, Israel says - have also been killed in that period, according to news agencies.

Hamas and the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) praised the "heroic" stabbing attack on Thursday. Eyewitnesses in Adam reported seeing a suspicious vehicle leaving the settlement shortly after the attack. Under global law, all Israeli settlement activities in the occupied territories are illegal.

"Yet another barbaric attack tonight". When will President Abbas and Palestinian leaders condemn the violence?' he wrote on Twitter.

Palestinians say that continued construction of illegal settlements on their land will ruin the chances of future Palestinian state constituting of the occupied West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem as its capital, which was occupied during the 1967 war.

The last stabbing attack in a West Bank settlement was in April, when a Palestinian tried to stab an Israeli with a screwdriver near a petrol station in an industrial area connected to the Maale Adumim settlement east of Jerusalem.

Israeli artillery strikes on Gaza on Wednesday have left three Palestinians dead, the besieged enclave's health ministry told AFP.

Hamas, considered a terrorist organisation by most of the West, seized control of the Gaza Strip in 2007.

On July 21, in one of the most intense bouts of fighting since a 2014 war, Israel and Hamas exchanged fire that killed four Palestinians - three of them Hamas militants - and one Israeli soldier.

"The West Bank is ready and able to avenge the blood of the martyrs", it said.
