Tomorrow's Lunar Eclipse Will Make History. Here's What Makes It So Special

  • A blood red moon lights up the sky during a total lunar eclipse

Moonrise in the United Kingdom will be at around 8.50pm.

The moon and the mars are seen during a lunar eclipse is seen above the cityscape and the television tower in Berlin, Germany, on July 27, 2018.

"When you first spot Mars rising in the east after sunset, you'll be startled by how bright it looks", says Sky & Telescope's Observing Editor Diana Hannikainen. Totality will last just over an hour beginning at 11:41 p.m.

North America missed out on Friday's lunar eclipse but can look forward to the next one on January 21, 2019, according to NASA.

A partial eclipse was also observed in some areas when the moon entered and left the earth's atmosphere, referred in astronomical terms as the earth's umbral shadow.

'They will move through reasonably quickly but if that coincides with the peak moment of the eclipse, they could obscure the moon'.

The Moon will pass right through the centre of the Earth's shadow, at the shadow's widest point. That's nearly as long as the longest lunar eclipse ever, which came in at an hour and 47 minutes.

The total eclipse would be visible over most of Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and South America on Friday and Saturday.

Lunar eclipses happen when the earth sits directly in between the sun and full moon, blocking the sun's light from hitting the moon and therefore shifting how the night sky appears on Earth.

Total lunar eclipse is very rare and only 30 per cent of all lunar eclipses are total. Lasting about 18 years or 223 synodic months, Saros cycles are defined by the recurring positions of the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon over that period of time. In metro cities, space enthusiasts may miss out on watching the moon being eclipsed due to pollution.

Australians looking to the sky early this morning have seen the Moon turn red amid this century's longest lunar eclipse.

Members of public are invited to bring binoculars or telescopes to enjoy viewing the lunar eclipse.

The full moon is seen during a "blood moon" eclipse over the temple of Apollo in Corinth, on July 27, 2018. Mars will appear 10 times brighter than usual, at magnitude -2.8 on that night. First, there will be a total lunar eclipse and although uncommon, this one is special because it's going to last a lot longer than usual - in fact the longest this century.

But, while there was a spectacular sunrise, the eclipsed moon disappeared behind low cloud at the crucial moment in Christchurch. Only red light makes it through the atmosphere. This light appears reddish.
