Joint defense with Cohen over; experts hired to analyze Trump-Cohen tape

  • Cohen Says Trump Knew About Trump Tower Meeting With Russians In Advance, CNN Reports

The network noted Mr Cohen doesn't have evidence to back this up, but he's willing to discuss it with special counsel Robert Mueller, who has launched an investigation into potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Fighting the Russia investigation on two fronts Friday, President Donald Trump mocked prosecutors for investigating presidential tweets, and he again denied knowing about a 2016 meeting between his son and a Russian lawyer claiming to have dirt on Hillary Clinton.

And then on Tuesday night, Cohen authorized his lawyer, Lanny Davis, to release a recording indicating that Trump knew about payments made to keep former Playboy model Karen McDougal's allegations of an affair with Trump out of the public eye.

If the Federal Bureau of Investigation could substantiate that Trump Jr. called Trump senior at the time he was organizing the Trump Tower meeting and other witnesses - Cohen or others - were prepared to talk about what they saw, it could strengthen Mueller's case.

Trump's present lawyer, Rudi Giuliani rubbished Cohen's claims, seeking to discredit his predecessor as "not credible".

Michael Cohen in NY on May 30, 2018. In response, a source close to Cohen mocked Giuliani, saying, "You mean Rudy is floating reckless, fact-free, false, wild speculation as if he were unhinged?"

"He's been lying for years", Giuliani said of Cohen.

According to The New York Times, it was Mr Weisselberg who set up the $35,000 retainer that Mr Cohen received from Mr Trump's personal trust - as a repayment to Mr Cohen for the hush money.

On Friday, Trump lashed out at Cohen without naming him, saying on Twitter: "Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam (Taxi cabs maybe?)".

At a CNN town hall in April, former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired, said collusion "is not actually a thing that exists under the federal laws of the United States".

In a tweet yesterday, the U.S. president accused Michael Cohen, his one-time fixer who is now under federal investigation, of deciding to "make up stories" to get himself out of trouble.

But the Justice Department does not believe it can indict a sitting president, as Mueller has reportedly restated to Giuliani and Trump's other lawyers.

This would be a significant development in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government.

Still, Nunberg noted that Trump would have known about the Russian Federation lawyer meeting "under normal circumstances".

If Trump knew beforehand and approved the meeting, he was knowingly accepting the assistance of a foreign power in the election - arguably a violation of USA campaign finance law, which prohibits all foreign sources of contributions and benefits in-kind - and he or other campaign aides may have gone on afterward to continue to work with that same foreign power.

Asked about former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's upcoming trial, Giuliani told CNN "New Day" co-anchor Alisyn Camerota that Manafort "was not involved with intimate business relationships with Donald Trump".

Why would it matter if Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting? .

The man who may hold some of Donald Trump's deepest secrets is up for investigation, in news that will no doubt make the U.S. leader shiver. Trump has denied having had an encounter with Daniels.

"Robert Mueller and his gang of 13 Angry Democrats obviously can not find Collusion", Trump said during a new set of tweets, so "now they are looking at my Tweets (along with 53 million other people)".
