  • A former Aurora Police Department lieutenant has been found guilty of using a criminal database to help his then-girlfriend pass a criminal background check with a fake identity

Aurora Police released a statement Monday afternoon that said an officer shot and killed a resident who appeared to be defending his home from an intruder early Monday morning. One of the callers, a woman, told 911 dispatcher that a man was breaking into her home.

The release said officers "arrived to a very chaotic and violent scene" and heard gunshots inside the home. A man driving a stolen truck was shot dead after he rammed several police cruisers, the Denver Post reported. "In order to conduct a comprehensive investigation, we continue to methodically collect evidence, interview witnesses, and review all available recordings, to include the body-worn cameras of all involved officers", the APD said in a statement Tuesday night.

Metz said the armed man died at the hospital.

Upon further investigation, Aurora police learned the armed man lived at the house, and had just shot and killed an intruder before encountering officers.

APD confirmed that the juvenile inside of the home sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the deceased intruder. Officers say the armed resident fatally shot him.

Police in Aurora received multiple calls around 1:30 a.m. Monday reporting a disturbance, news station KUSA reported. 'We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time'.

He explained that the officer has since been placed on paid "administrative reassignment" in accordance with APD policy.

Neighbors told the paper that the deceased homeowner was a longtime resident, grandfather, and retired family man who often worked on his front gardens.

Aurora Police Chief Nicholas Metz has disclosed some limited information in connection with the incident.

The identities of the victims will be released by the Adams County Coroner's Office.

Police haven't given the names yet of the homeowner or the suspect.

This is the second deadly officer-involved shooting in recent days by Aurora police.
