Races in some constituencies were so close that they could have gone to the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), had it not been split between Nelson Chinamasa's MDC Alliance and Thokozani Khupe's MDC-T. "We don't accept that", Biti said. "We saw a helicopter, a military helicopter. buzzing the city and you could see a soldier on the helicopter pointing a machine gun at people".

Protesters surrounded vehicles belonging to the observer missions as they passed through downtown Harare.

Zimbabwean president and leader of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) Emmerson Mnangagwa, one of the 23 candidates on the presidential ballot, blamed the opposition for inciting violence in order "to disrupt electoral process".

Police confirmed the death toll of three, and Mnangagwa issued a statement blaming the opposition for the unrest and fatalities.

The opposition leader's spokesman Nkululeko Sibanda said the army's reaction in quelling disturbances in the capital was disproportionate and unjustified.

Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu said late Wednesday that the military will remain in the capital until "this situation is over".

"The opposition. have perhaps interpreted our understanding to be weak, and I think they are testing our resolve and I think they are making a big mistake".

"Deployment of troops reveals the uncomfortable truth that, eight months after Mugabe was ousted, the army remains the pre-eminent political force", said Piers Pigou, a Zimbabwe expert at the International Crisis Group think-tank.

"The more the presidential vote is delayed, the more it calls into question the population's confidence in the election process", said former Liberian leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the lead observer of a USA monitoring mission. It called for transparency in the release of results.

The preliminary findings were released during a media briefing held on Wednesday by global observer missions who have been monitoring the climate leading up to and during the July 30 election.

Yesterday, at least six people were feared dead last night, while several others sustained gunshot injuries after soldiers and police in Harare used brute force to suppress MDC Alliance activists protesting against alleged electoral theft of their vote by Zanu PF and the Zec.

The United Nations and former colonial power Britain also expressed concern over the violence, and called for "restraint".

Under Mugabe, elections were marred by fraud and often deadly violence, with the European Union mission banned since 2002.

Zimbabwe's ruling party has won a majority of seats in Parliament, the electoral commission announced Wednesday, as the country braced for the first official results of the presidential election.

Chamisa said on Twitter he had won the "popular vote" in Monday's election, in which he challenged Mugabe's successor, Mnangagwa from the ruling ZANU-PF party.

His bombshell claim came on Tuesday just hours before the first official results showing Zanu-PF had won a thumping majority in the Zimbabwe election emerged. You voted for total Change in this past election! We have won this one together.

The riots surged up to the fence of the Rainbow Towers Hotel & and Conference Centre, where the electoral commission has been announcing results and many worldwide election observers are staying.

The electoral commission warned that final results of the presidential first round may not be known until Friday or even Saturday.

ZEC chairwoman Priscilla Chigumba, a high court judge, has flatly denied allegations of bias and rejected accusations of rigging.
